Snooki Taken Into Custody After Driving Into Italian Cop Car

It takes talent to be able to get into trouble everywhere you go. No one exemplifies this statement more than our darling Snooki, who is currently in custody in Florence, Italy. She crashed into a car while driving and — because this is Snooki and life does this to her — the other vehicle just happened to be a cop car!

Fortunately for Snookums, she hadn’t been drinking. A source reported that “zero alcohol was involved,” which is a lucky break, but she’s still in trouble considering the city of Florence and the Jersey Shore cast don’t exactly get along. This occurred yesterday, and TMZ reports that no one’s been injured and this isn’t a formal arrest. Apparently Deena Nicole (of bridge hopping fame) was in the passenger seat at the time. Free Snooki, Italy! FREE SNOOKI! Priceless.

A Title Means the World for LeBron James

MIAMI – LeBron James(notes) needs championships, a fistful of rings, and everything changes for him. Victory validates everything. People can disdain his decision to front-run with Dwyane Wade(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes), to talk of himself in the third person, but nothing else matters. Championships change everything.

James never wanted to be the villain, but bad advice and a worse sense of self delivered the black hat. Publicly, people started to see what those on the inside had always witnessed for themselves. From USA Basketball threatening to ban him from the 2008 Beijing Olympics to a behind-the-scenes diva act in Cleveland, his infomercial on his personal cable TV network had been the stunning culmination of a lifetime.

“We got a lot of flack this year, mostly because of myself,” James said.

These Miami Heat were always going to win championships. They’re too talented, too devastating a combination to be kept down. There was only the matter of whether the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers had a title or two left in them before the Heat took over. Only fools sold the idea that this could be a colossal failure over the long term. They don’t get to play this “we’re-proving-people-wrong” nonsense. They started slowly, struggled, because they believed it would be easy. Most of us did.

James sees it differently now, and that’s wise of him. He’s grown a little smarter, and presumably so have those surrounding him. He listens to people beyond his inner circle, and the benefits have been unmistakable this season. When James stopped saying things which necessitated apologies and clarifications, something amazing happened: The swirl surrounding the Heat subsided, the team played far more consistent ball and the James-Wade partnership galvanized on the floor.

Now, James marches into Game 1 of the NBA Finals with devastating playoff carnage left in his wake. Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowtizki has been the most spectacular scorer of this postseason, but James has been the best player. He’s defended four positions on the floor – including an absolute shutdown of MVP Derrick Rose(notes) in the Eastern Conference finals. His ability to score with such ease is an immense testament to playing with Wade, who makes it impossible for defenses to completely load up on LeBron.

Scottie Pippen dared compare James favorably to Michael Jordan, but clearly it isn’t an outrageous suggestion. Yes, James needs his championships, but he has something that Kobe Bryant(notes) never did: a superstar perimeter teammate to make his life easier. Winning six titles won’t make either of them Jordan, just as falling short of six doesn’t disqualify them.

The requisite burden for James becomes chasing the Jordan comparisons, but James has a much, much more difficult job. Everything makes it harder to win titles now – more teams, more global stars deepening the talent pool, more difficulty in keeping a team together. Coaching is better. Preparation to stop a great player is so much more sophisticated with technology and an ability to break down holes and weaknesses on teams.

Jordan was so fortunate to have as his general manager Jerry Krause, a man who surrounded Jordan in two different eras – pre- and post-baseball – with the perfect complements. James needed free agency to find his Pippen, but Krause flipped Olden Polynice on draft day in 1987 to give Jordan a top-50 teammate. It should’ve been so much harder for the Bulls to find a superstar sidekick, but Jordan – who wanted North Carolina’s Joe Wolf in the draft – had one of the best talent evaluators ever on his side.

So much about today’s NBA is still seen through the prism of the Jordan era, and the belief that Jordan never would’ve chased a fistful of rings by running with rival stars. No one will ever know because he never had to do it; Krause put the rosters together for him. James still believes his villainous reputation comes from leaving Cleveland for Miami, but no one outside of northeastern Ohio was that bothered with his bolting for Miami. It was the walk-up to the departure, the television show, the smoke-filled stage with his new teammates in mid-July. That stayed with the public, and it stayed with those within the league.

This delivered LeBron James the villain act, but that’ll change soon because winning changes everything. The narrative will change because it always evolves. However James acted, however he rubbed people, a fistful of rings forever validates and vindicates. Everyone says the pressure’s on Nowtizki to win his title at an advancing age of 32, but this is James’ second trip to the Finals and this is the burden he thrust upon himself with the formation of the NBA’s super team in South Beach.

For all the flack James says he brought on the Heat this year, the flip side comes now: Win a title and all the praise, all the adulation, comes for him. This has never been a complicated formula in American sports, and never will. James can behave how he wants – good, bad or somewhere between – and it won’t matter. Only now, it’s the scoreboard.

Pat Riley was right: There’s winning and there’s misery. That’s all that’s left for LeBron James now. That’s the NBA Finals for him.

Sean Kingston Hospitalized

MIAMI - Hip-hop singer Sean Kingston has been stabilized and moved to the intensive care unit at a hospital after crashing his watercraft into a Miami Beach bridge, his publicist said Monday.

The publicist, Joseph Carozza, said Kingston's family is grateful for everyone's prayers and support.

Kingston and a female passenger were injured when the watercraft hit the Palm Island Bridge around 6 p.m. Sunday, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said.

The Miami Herald reports that a passing boater saw the accident and took the two on board his vessel.

Both were hospitalized early Monday at Ryder Trauma Center, but Pino said he didn't know their conditions.

Authorities are investigating the crash, and "nothing at this point would indicate that alcohol played a role," Pino said.

Kingston rose to fame with his 2007 hit "Beautiful Girls" and was also featured on songs by artists including Justin Bieber. His self-titled debut album sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

On Twitter, Bieber posted a message of support for Kingston.

"Got my friend Sean Kingston in my prayers tonight," Bieber tweeted early Monday. "A true friend and big bro. Please keep him in your prayers tonight as well."

A number of hip-hop musicians were in Miami Beach over the weekend for Urban Beach Week.

In a 2007 interview with The Associated Press, Kingston described his music as a fusion of reggae, pop, rap and R&B.

"It's Sean Kingston genre. I have my own genre," Kingston told the AP at the time. "No disrespect to no artist or dudes out there. I feel like I am my own person. I am doing my own thing."

His music has been unique among hip-hop offerings, as Kingston refused to use profanity.

"To put it in my music, that's not the message I am trying to send out," he said in the 2007 interview. "That's not the type of artist I am trying to be."

Woman shot to death Saturday night in San Jose

Police are investigating the Saturday night murder of a 35-year-old San Jose woman, who died of gunshot wounds in a black Mercedes-Benz sedan.

San Jose police officials did not release the identity of the woman, who was killed in the 4000 block of Ambler Way.

At 10:37 p.m., police responded to reports of a "disturbance" and gunfire. When officers arrived, they found a woman with gunshot wounds in a Mercedes-Benz. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Jose Police Department.

About 20 minutes later, police were notified that a 20-year-old San Jose man walked in to the emergency department of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose with gunshot wounds. The man, whose name also was not provided, was treated and released for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and taken to the police department for questioning. Police said the man was struck by gunfire near the location of the murder.

The relationship between the woman and man is unknown. It is unclear if the woman and man were involved with the disturbance on Ambler Way or if the incident is gang-related or tied to other recent killings or stabbings, police said.

The investigation has been hampered by the fact that potential witnesses have been uncooperative with investigators, police repored.

Pink pork won't kill you according to the USDA

If you're one of those pork connoisseurs who prefers your chop or tenderloin to be pink in the middle, rest assured: As of Tuesday, the USDA says you're in the clear as far as food-borne illness is concerned.
More from The Stir: Exploding Watermelons Are Da Bomb for Summer Barbecues

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has lowered its temperature recommendation for cooking pork to 145 degrees -- down from 160. (This means that pork will be held to the same standard as beef, veal, and lamb.) Moreover, it is recommended to let the pork rest for three minutes after removing it from the grill or oven; the temp will continue to rise slightly while killing any remaining pathogens.

Of course, there's an inherent irony in the fact that the USDA is lowering pork's minimum temperature ...

It's that professional chefs have been cooking pork this way FOR YEARS! Now home cooks and backyard barbecuers can finally catch up to the restaurant standard without worry. But the question is: Will they?

The USDA's longstanding 160 degrees recommendation is so ingrained in our minds, it may be difficult for some to adjust to the new temp, explains Rob Weland, a chef at an upscale restaurant in Washington:

People have been taught this for generations and it's going to take a long time to get this removed ... It will be good for the next generation not to be so fearful so they can enjoy pork in a way they may not have been able to in the past.

Pork producers have been lobbying the USDA for years to lower the recommendation, arguing that improved feed and housing methods -- namely, moving hogs into bird- and rodent-proof buildings -- reduced the risk of pathogens and disease. From the consumer point of view, it's surprising to learn they were successful this time around given all the recent horror stories in the media about how factory farms are harmful to animals, the environment, and most important, the public.

Bugadoo Donkey Strollers $1,200 base price, $1,500 as tested

For once, all the nosy parents at the park are going to grill you about your Bugaboo Donkey stroller instead of the kids riding inside it.

With its movable, modular parts and expanding frame, the Bugaboo Donkey can shape-shift into a variety of modes. Depending on how you set it up, it’s suitable for a single child, twins or two children of different ages. It’s a real-life Transformer.

The basic idea of the Donkey is that it can be configured to suit your growing family. The base model features everything you need for one child. As your family grows, you can buy an additional seat, or purchase two seats and bassinets for twins. It will also fit two infant car seats at once.

In single-child mode, you can attach a seat or bassinet (it ships with both) to a detachable frame that hooks onto the body of the stroller. The detachable bassinet comes off easily, and makes for a great portable bed for an infant. The seat can face forward or backward, and it angles to recline in five different positions, including prone when rear-facing. A lever on the top of the seat back makes adjusting the seat angle super easy — you can even do it one-handed, which is a nice touch.

At its most upright, your child will be sitting as if in a chair. One of our two test subjects, a 16-month-old toddler, really dug the Donkey’s upright elevated ride, which let him look around.

But the major magic happens when you extend the stroller. Flip three levers, push a button in the center, and the frame extends so you can attach a second seat or bassinet. It’s also handy if you want to haul something alongside your child, as the cargo basket also extends completely beneath the base to give you a little more storage room. (This is in addition to the detachable shopping basket that fits next to the seat in single-child mode.)

Best of all, it’s nearly effortless to adjust. It never took me more than about 20 seconds to go from single to dual mode or back again.

For a two-kid stroller, it’s surprisingly svelte. In the wide setting, it’s 28.5 inches across. While not exactly slim, it’s only two inches wider than some of the more popular, high-end single-child strollers. And the front side wheels, which can turn in any direction (or lock in place for jogging) let the stroller pivot like a Heisman-winning running back, making it pretty easy to navigate despite the width.

I never had an issue getting it through doorways. One negative, however, is how bulky it is even when collapsed. While it’s easily broken down, I had trouble fitting it in the back seat of my Honda Civic.

And then there’s the ride quality. The Donkey rolls smoothly, with the air-filled tires negotiating ruts and bumps in the pavement like a four-wheel drive vehicle. Although I felt some bumps on the jogging path, it’s quite a smooth ride overall.

Aesthetically, this is one good-looking stroller. On a trip to the San Francisco Zoo, we were stopped no fewer than four times by people wanting to know more about it. Some of that curiosity was due to the press the stroller has received due to its high price tag. But two of the queries were purely in the form of, “That’s a great looking stroller — what is it?”

Finally, in what may be the most important assessment, both of the children we used as test subjects loved it. Our 2-month-old went in easy and stayed happy once inside, while the 16-month-old dug his new ride.

Yes, this is a very expensive stroller. But if you have the dough and a growing family, it’s tough to top.

WIRED : Parts swap out with about as much ease as a Mr. Potato Head. Pivoting wheels turn like a dervish. Pretty light at 28.6 pounds in base mode. Detachable shopping basket. One-handed seat angle adjustment lets you keep kids comfy without straining your back. Optional adapters work with many popular car seats (Britax, Maxi Cosi, Graco, Chicco).

Lifeguards' High Pay Riles Calif. Beach City

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Aurora Toussaint brings her disabled son to the sun-kissed beaches of this Southern California city almost every day in the summer, knowing that the lifeguards who watch from their towers will be there in seconds should anything go wrong.

Yet Toussaint, was shocked to learn that most of the fulltime lifeguards in this city earn well over $100,000 in total compensation a year -- including salary, overtime and benefits -- more than Toussaint made in her previous life as a nurse and more than she believes is right in an economy where pink slips have become common fare.

"When I first heard that I was amazed at how much they make. To think that these are lifeguards! That's more than some doctors make," said Toussaint, 55, who retired early to care for her seizure-prone son. "It does kind of make me feel like, `Gosh, maybe I should be a lifeguard.'"

That's the kind of reaction Newport Beach's 13-member fulltime lifeguard crew has drawn this month, since the local newspaper editorialized about lifeguard salaries, benefits and overtime pay that in at least two instances top $200,000 as the city struggles to rein in pension costs.

Base salaries for Newport Beach lifeguards range from $58,000 for the lowest-paid officer to $108,492 for the top-paid battalion chief, according to a 2010 city report on lifeguard pay.

With overtime only added in, more than half of the 13 cleared $100,000 and the rest made between $59,500 and $98,500. Adding in pension contributions, medical benefits, life insurance and other pay, two battalion chiefs earned more than $200,000 in 2010, while the lowest-paid officer made more than $98,000.

All lifeguards received $400 sunglass allowances and two cleared $28,000 apiece in overtime and night duty pay.

The ensuing debate over the merits of having lifeguards as well-paid as some CEOs has divided this wealthy coastal city, spawned a pro-lifeguard Facebook page and created headlines as far away as England ("Time for a Career Change? California's Baywatch lifeguards paid up to $210,000 per year!").

The swell of anger from beachgoers and budget-watchers alike has blindsided the lifeguards, who have for years enjoyed the prestige of their jobs in an ocean-centric town that banks on summer tourism. Now, as the pressure mounts, they are balking at their portrayal as suntanned slackers lounging in beach towers as the surf rolls in.

Those whose salaries are in question point out that they hold management roles, have decades of service and are considered public safety employees under the fire department, the same as fire captains and battalion chiefs. The fulltime guards train more than 200 seasonal lifeguards who make between $16 and $22 an hour, run a junior lifeguard program that brings in $1 million a year and oversee safety on nearly seven miles of sand.

And when the surf is really pumping -- like it was late this week with 20-foot wave faces at the infamous Wedge -- the supervisory lifeguards are just as busy as the seasonal staff with dangerous rescues, said Brent Jacobsen, president of the Lifeguard Management Association, the lifeguards' union.

Many began as seasonal guards and worked their way into management roles and must stay certified as instructors in an array of advanced emergency, scuba and rescue techniques, Jacobsen said.

"Unfortunately, there's a lot of disinformation out there. People get this idea that we're talking about 17-year-old kids in lifeguard towers making $200,000 and that's not correct," he said. "We're professional level. Lifeguarding here is different than any other place in the entire world."

Newport Beach's lifeguards can retire at 50 with 90 percent of their salary with 30 years of service, according to state data.

"Because of the compensation, lifeguarding has evolved from a brief and youthful interlude into a career and that's probably what's most shocking," said Councilwoman Leslie Daigle, who added that in the winter the fulltime lifeguards stayed busy answering phones and painting guard towers. "I think people are looking for elected officials to be more fiscally conservative. We love lifeguards, but that's not the issue."

In budget talks, City Manager David Kiff proposed converting four of the fulltime positions to part-time status, an idea city council is expected to review.

The lifeguards' union is trying to avoid the reductions by striking a deal that could see them increase their pension contribution from 3.5 percent to 9 percent annually, while instituting a new pension tier for future hires, said Jacobsen. Three fulltime guarding positions that are now vacant because of retirements could also be eliminated, with staffing shifts among the remaining group to cover all duties, he said.

He acknowledged that the current pension benefit now seems excessive given the recession.

"It was reasonable at the time. When we were negotiating, people were making such ridiculous amounts of money on the real estate market and we don't get those big jumps in salary that the private sector does," he said.

Kiff believes the salaries the city's lifeguard supervisors earn are appropriate given the competitive job market for top-tier lifeguards in Southern California, but would like to see the pension scaled back.

In Los Angeles County, where guards patrol beaches from Santa Monica to Torrance, lifeguard salaries are fairly comparable, according to a public salary database on the state controller's website, but the retirement benefit is less. Staff who retire at age 50 with 30 years of service receive only 60 percent of their salary.

In San Diego, lifeguards make roughly the same salary range but must retire later, at age 55, and get 75 percent of their salary with 30 years of service.

"We compete for those jobs and we are in line with what they pay those folks," Kiff said. "I think people confuse professional guarding with the tower guards and they think, `Oh my gosh, how can a guy in red shorts sitting in a tower earn that?' We're not talking about those individuals."

Newport Beach attracted more than 7 million beachgoers last year and lifeguard supervisors oversaw 2,190 water rescues and more than 5,000 medical aid calls, while tower guards intervened more than 76,000 times to warn people of rip currents or high surf. Two people died each year in 2009 and 2010.

Still, for some, statistics will never justify such compensation.

Leonard Musgrave, a former oil company employee, was so outraged that he wrote a letter to the local paper, The Orange County Register, earlier this month inquiring why the city didn't simply put up a sign reading, "Swim at your own risk." The 69-year-old retiree said he isn't swayed by the lifeguards' responsibilities or years of service.

"I supervised 13, 14 engineers when I was working and I was making $111,000 when I retired three years ago with an MBA and a technical engineering degree," said Musgrave, who doesn't have a pension. "I mean, come on! All you have to do is look at good-looking women at the beach. I mean, they shouldn't even get paid! I'd do it for 10 percent of that pay. That's a good job."

Rosario Dawson Splits From Her BF!

Another one bites the dust.

According to reports, Rosario Dawson has split from her DJ BF, Mathieu Schreyer.
The pair got together shortly after Rosario split from Jason Lewis in 2008, but apparently Ro is ready to move on and broke things off with her French beau.

As one source explains:

"They were always in separate places because of their careers. I know her close friends did not love his personality. He wasn't that smiley type of guy."

Hmm. What does that mean?? Was he a grumpy Gus? Was he boooooring? Let's gab, Ro. What exactly didn't you like about him???

B.G. Facing up to 10 Years in Prison over gun charge

How many more rappers are going to be locked up ? I can name 10 right off the top of my head that are locked up or headed to jail soon.

B.G. is facing gun charges, after being indicted by a federal grand jury on gun and obstruction charges yesterday.

B.G , is facing up to 10 years in prison over an incident in November of 2009.

The 30-year-old rapper and two other men were arrested when police stopped their car and found three guns, loaded magazines and extended clips.

To make matters worse, two of the three guns police found were reported stolen.

According to the indictment, B.G. conspired with two other men to get a man named Demounde Pollard to claim ownership of the guns.

Pollard, 19, is accused of signing a false affidavit stating that B.G. did not possess the guns.

Pollard and another man named Jerod Fedison have already pleaded guilty to the related charges.

LimeWire Settles With Record Companies for $105 Million

LimeWire, the peer-to-peer file-sharing network that was shut down last year following a federal injunction that kept its users from sharing copyrighted material, has agreed to a $105 million out-of-court settlement with 13 record companies. The agreement ends a five-year legal battle in which the network was charged with large-scale copyright infringement.

LimeWire and its founder Mark Gorton were found liable of copyright infringement in May of last year, and a trial to determine how much money should be paid out to the labels represented by the Recording Industry Association of America who were suing the company. In a court appearance last week, Gorton defended himself by claiming that he had misunderstood the law. “I was wrong,” Gorton said. “I didn’t think our behavior was inducing [copyright infringement]. I understand that a court has found otherwise.”

Brandon Phillips shocks Twitter follower by showing up at his game

When it comes to youth baseball, players are sometimes responsible for bringing postgame drinks and snacks for the team.

Connor Echols, however, recently put a new spin on the tradition and brought an All-Star from his local Major League Baseball team, instead.

In what may well represent the pinnacle of modern technological achievement, the 14-year-old Cincinnati Flames third baseman (@cecholzz) was able to lure Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips(notes) (@datdudebp) to his U-14 select team game last week by issuing a simple suggestion over Twitter ...

"@DatDudeBP should really come watch the 14u Cincy flames in West Chester tonight"

... and then by providing some directions after Phillips showed some initial interest (he had been eating at a nearby restaurant when he received Echols' tweet).

A few hours and many autographs later, Echols was the most popular kid in the eighth grade and Phillips had increased his reputation around Cincinnati as one of the fan-friendliest players in the bigs.

From the Cincinnati Enquirer:

It was about 5:45 p.m. when Phillips received Echols' invitation on his off day, the only one he and the Reds will have until June 2. Phillips said he was wondering what he was going to do with the rest of his day.

"I said, 'Let me think about this,' " Phillips said. "His game was at 6:15. When I got finished eating, it was like 6:10 and I thought, well shoot, I'm going to go to his game. I had nothing else to do. I thought, 'Let me go out and support the little man.' I went out there and he had a great game. I met all his teammates. I met everybody in the park. It was fun. I had a great time."

What makes this story even better is the fact that Echols had a great performance in front of one of his heroes, going 3 for 5 at the plate. "I don't really get nervous a lot, but that's the most I ever had butterflies in my stomach in my life," Echols told the Dayton Daily News. "I just didn't want to embarrass myself."

Man, if only it had been that easy to contact Ryne Sandberg when I was in Little League ...

But what goes unsaid here, of course, is that many of today's athletes get hundreds of requests via Twitter every day. It takes someone like Brandon Phillips — whose dedication to fans has been personally witnessed by BLS — to actually take it to the next level and do something that will forever leave a positive impression on those who buy tickets or spend their time watching the game on television.

It's a sign of appreciation from Phillips that even a St. Louis Cardinals fan has to love.

Warrant Issued For Jimmy Henchmen; Mogul Accused Of Cocaine Distribution

Rap manager Jimmy "Henchman" Rosemond is wanted by federal authorities for allegedly being involved in a cocaine distribution operation.

The New York Post reports that an arrest warrant was issued for Rosemond last week.

The rap manager, through his company Czar Entertainment, has worked with Game, Brandy, Sean Kingston and Akon, has yet to turn himself in.

Rosemond's lawyer Jeffery Lichtman confirmed that a federal prosecutor said the warrant had been issued, but there was no copy of the warrant, or the charges provided.

Jimmy Rosemond is a well known executive in the music business, due to his high profile client roster, mainly Compton rapper Game, who infamously feuded with 50 Cent.

Rosemond himself was involved in a beef with G-Unit, when Tony Yayo and an associate allegedly assaulted his son on a street in front of Czar Entertainment's offices.

Additionally, Tupac Shakur accused Rosemond of being complicit in his 1994 shooting inside the lobby of the Quad Recording Studio.

More recently, Jimmy Rosemond was involved with helping Wyclef Jean run for office in Haiti, in addition to supporting the current President of the country, Michel Martelly.

Crime & Courts U.S. Seeks ‘Fugitive’ Who Posed as Diplomat to Export Porsches to Russia

There are those inside the United States who end up in trouble for trying to avoid detection as an agent of the Russian government. And then there are those who end up in trouble for openly proclaiming such connections.

The U.S. State Department has launched an investigation into whether a former New York resident and others posed as Russian diplomats to car dealerships around the country so they could obtain diplomatic discounts on Porsche and Lexus vehicles and then sell them overseas for possibly tens of thousands of dollars in profit, Fox News has learned.

In February, authorities questioned the alleged ringleader of the operation. No public charges have been filed in the case, but Justice Department prosecutors have filed documents in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, suggesting charges are at least pending.

Vladyslav Timku, the alleged ringleader of the operation, has since fled to the Ukraine and is now considered a "fugitive from justice," according to the court documents filed in the case. He is believed to be 24 years old.

Timku and his co-conspirators allegedly set up bank accounts and credit cards under false names -- some were the names of true, unwitting embassy employees in Washington, others were totally fabricated identities such as "Ramzi Teymurov," "Viktor Yorashevich," "Artem Yedoshin" and "Ekaterina Mahno."

"The fraudulent diplomatic identities induced the dealerships to provide discounts and tax exemptions to which Timku and his co-conspirators would not have been otherwise entitled," prosecutors allege in court documents. "After purchasing the vehicles ... Timku then arranged to have them resold for profit and shipped to foreign countries."

Beginning in February, the group allegedly targeted dealerships in several U.S. states, including North Carolina, Texas, Missouri and Connecticut. In total, they purchased at least six Porsche Cayennes and luxury Lexus vehicles, according to court documents.

One of the dealerships targeted was Performance Auto Mall in Chapel Hill, N.C. In early February, Timku "posed as a Russian diplomat" and agreed to buy an eight-cylinder, 2011 edition of the luxury Porsche Cayenne SUV at the "discount sale price" of $67,890, according to court documents and a former dealership employee familiar with the case.

Porsches like that are sold in Russia, but they are hard to come by and can sell for the equivalent of $180,000, according to Daniel Brunty, the former Porsche sales manager at Performance Auto Mall. Porsche sends more vehicles to the United States than anywhere else, so in Russia a black market for Porsches from the United States has blossomed, Brunt said.

For as little as $10,000, someone can sneak a vehicle into Russia. "It depends on what palms you have to grease to get it into the country," Brunty said. Such smugglers can then sell a Porsche for as much as $110,000, pocketing up to $30,000 a vehicle.

Porsche tries to fight the practice. Brunty said his former dealership had a "warning list" with nearly 20 pages' worth of names and companies that Porsche suspected of exporting vehicles to Russia.

"They frown very, very heavily on exporting," he said.

In Timku's case, the supposed Russian diplomat never stepped foot in Performance Auto Mall, according to Brunty, who said he had only a "peripheral role" in the deal but generally knew about the case. Sales negotiations with the supposed Russian diplomat were conducted over email and fax.

Certain foreign diplomats and other foreign officials are able to make "tax exempt and discounted purchases" of certain vehicles in the United States, U.S. officials said in court documents. According to Brunty, manufacturers such as BMW offer diplomats as much as 7 percent off sticker prices, and while Porsche has no official or established discount for diplomats, such a discount was extended to the supposed Russian diplomat in this case.

As a matter of "due diligence" to combat identity theft, the sales agent handling the deal contacted the State Department to verify the passport information and documents provided, Brunty said. It all turned out to be false; even though Timku was allegedly posing as a Russian diplomat, he took on the name of a Malaysian embassy employee in Washington, according to court documents.

It was almost "by accident" that federal authorities first got onto Timku's trail, Brunty said, adding that he and his dealership colleagues wondered whether the supposed Russian diplomat was really some sort of "front man."

"We kept thinking that someone was going to break his legs," Brunty said.
As part of the Timku investigation, the State Department intercepted and seized five vehicles from a New Jersey site in March, as they were heading to destinations overseas, according to court documents.

Representatives currently at dealerships allegedly targeted by Timku did not return calls for comment. Spokesmen for the Russian and Ukrainian embassies in Washington said they hadn't heard about the case.

Meanwhile, a Justice Department official involved with the case declined to comment, saying there is still an "active investigation."

Supreme Court Gives Police Leeway In Home Searches

Reporting from Washington— The Supreme Court gave police more leeway to break into homes or apartments in search of illegal drugs when they suspect the evidence otherwise might be destroyed.

Ruling in a Kentucky case Monday, the justices said that officers who smell marijuana and loudly knock on the door may break in if they hear sounds that suggest the residents are scurrying to hide the drugs.

Residents who "attempt to destroy evidence have only themselves to blame" when police burst in, said Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. for an 8-1 majority.

In her dissent, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she feared the ruling gave police an easy way to ignore 4th Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. She said the amendment's "core requirement" is that officers have probable cause and a search warrant before they break into a house.

"How 'secure' do our homes remain if police, armed with no warrant, can pound on doors at will and …forcibly enter?" Ginsburg asked.

An expert on criminal searches said the decision would encourage the police to undertake "knock and talk" raids.

"I'm surprised the Supreme Court would condone this, that if the police hear suspicious noises inside, they can break in. I'm even more surprised that nearly all of them went along," said John Wesley Hall, a criminal defense lawyer in Little Rock, Ark.

In the past, the court has insisted that homes are special preserves. As Alito said, "The 4th Amendment has drawn a firm line at the entrance to the house." One exception to the search warrant rule involves an emergency, such as screams coming from a house. Police may also pursue a fleeing suspect who enters a residence.

The Kentucky case began when police in Lexington sought to arrest a man who had sold crack cocaine to an informer. They followed the man to an apartment building, but lost contact with him. They smelled marijuana coming from one apartment. Though it turned out not to be the apartment of their suspect, they pounded on the door, called, "Police," and heard people moving inside.

At this, the officers announced they were coming in and broke down the door. Instead of the original suspect, they found Hollis King smoking marijuana and arrested him. They also found powder cocaine. King was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

The Supreme Court ruled in Kentucky vs. King that the officers' conduct "was entirely lawful," and they were justified in breaking in to prevent the destruction of the evidence.

"When law enforcement officers who are not armed with a warrant knock on a door, they do no more than any private citizen may do," Alito wrote. A resident need not respond, he added. But the sounds of people moving and perhaps toilets being flushed could justify police entering without a warrant.

The ruling was not a final loss for King. The justices said the Kentucky state court should consider again whether police had faced an emergency situation in this case.

Troy Polamalu Makes Great Use Of NFL Lockout

Different NFL players are dealing with the lockout in different ways. While many are taking to different fields to get workouts in, a few are taking the first real offseasons they've had in decades to get a little finishing work done on their personal lives. Pittsburgh Steelers All-World safety Troy Polamalu(notes) is one of them; Polamalu returned to his alma mater of USC and completed his degree in history in time to take part in a ceremony with over 1,000 master's and undergraduate students on Friday.

Polamalu was drafted in 2003 after his senior season, but didn't have time to complete his degree before. The 30-year-old Polamalu posted his thoughts about the event on his website

I'm thrilled to announce that on this cool, sunny Friday morning I donned a cap and gown, walked across the stage in the beautiful Alumni Park at University of Southern California, and was handed my diploma. I'm officially a USC graduate! While I feel excited and fulfilled, that's not really what I want to focus on in this message — I want to talk about the reason behind my decision to go back and finish what I started.

The majority of top picks in the NFL get drafted before they complete their college education. I truly love football and it's such an immense blessing and privilege as an athlete to be given the rare opportunity to use those talents at the highest professional level, but it's certainly not a replacement for an education. So I decided to finish what I started and walked that stage today not only because it was very important to me personally, but because I want to emphasize the importance of education, and that nothing should supersede it.

Polamalu is also sponsoring a Student of the Year program, which those interested in forwarding nominations can do so by following the directions on his website and sending nominations in by Tuesday, May 17.

On a personal note, I got to talk with Polamalu for a few minutes last year at the Nike 7-on-7 football camp in Portland, Oregon, and it's clear that he's one of the good guys. You'd have to go quite a while before you'd find a more centered and together individual in the NFL, and this is just another example of how he gets things done, and why he's been so successful — on the field and off.

CBS Confirms Ashton Kutcher Will Join 'Two and a Half Men'

Ashton Kutcher has won the "Two and a Half Men" sweepstakes.

CBS and Warner Bros. Television have announced that he will join the cast of the hit comedy and replace Charlie Sheen.

"I can't wait to get to work with this ridiculously talented 2.5 team and I believe we can fill the stage with laughter that will echo in viewers' homes," said Kutcher. "I can't replace Charlie Sheen but I'm going to work my ass off to entertain the hell out of people!"

The exact dollar figure he will be paid is not known, but a source says Kutcher is getting a "huge payday" to join the hit sitcom, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news Thursday.

"We are so lucky to have someone as talented, joyful and just plain remarkable as Ashton joining our family," Chuck Lorre, creator and Men executive producer, said in a statement. "Added to that is the deep sigh of relief knowing that our family stays together. If I was any happier, it'd be illegal.

The deal came together quickly in the wake of Hugh Grant passing on the opportunity to join the show. THR reports that Lorre has crafted a storyline to introduce Kutcher in a way that satisfies the network and studio.

"It's really funny," says one source. "People are going to love it."

Broadcasting & Cable reported Thursday that Kutcher's name was surfacing as a possible Sheen replacement. The actor, who starred in the winter hit "No Strings Attached," would be taking his first regular series gig since catapulting to stardom on Fox's "That 70's Show." He also executive produced the hit MTV hidden-camera series "Punk'd," among others.

Kutcher brings a youthful fan base to the CBS show, as well as a big online profile with 6.7 million Twitter followers, which could help CBS promote the show.
"Chuck's really happy," another source says.

Kutcher played coy on the news Thursday. "I'm starting to become convinced that people put my name in articles just to improve their SEO or hoping I'll tweet it," he wrote on Twitter.

A short time later, he tweeted: "What's the square root of 6.25?" The answer is, in fact, 2 1/2.

Sheen was fired from "Men" in early March, after a weeks-long media circus that had the actor attacking everything from Alcoholics Anonymous to Lorre.

He then launched a Web series, "Sheen's Korner," in which he continued his rant against his former bosses, and embarked on a nationwide tour, "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option," which kicked off in early April with a disastrous show in Detroit. The month-long tour proved to be hit or miss, with some crowds booing the star and walking out mid-show, while others gave him standing ovations.

At some tour stops, he expressed his desire to return to "Men," even saying he would apologize to get his old job back.

The tour ended earlier this month in Seattle, but Sheen recently announced that he was going to continue the tour in Australia and Europe.

Alarming combo: Bedbugs with 'superbug' germ found

ATLANTA – Hate insects? Afraid of germs? Researchers are reporting an alarming combination: bedbugs carrying a staph "superbug." Canadian scientists detected drug-resistant staph bacteria in bedbugs from three hospital patients from a downtrodden Vancouver neighborhood.

Bedbugs have not been known to spread disease, and there's no clear evidence that the five bedbugs found on the patients or their belongings had spread the MRSA germ they were carrying or a second less dangerous drug-resistant bacteria.

However, bedbugs can cause itching that can lead to excessive scratching. That can cause breaks in the skin that make people more susceptible to these germs, noted Dr. Marc Romney, one of the study's authors.

The study is small and very preliminary. "But it's an intriguing finding" that needs to be further researched, said Romney, medical microbiologist at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver.

The hospital is the closest one to the poor Downtown Eastside neighborhood near the city's waterfront. Romney said he and his colleagues did the research after seeing a simultaneous boom in bedbugs and MRSA cases from the neighborhood.

Five bedbugs were crushed and analyzed. MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, was found on three bugs. MRSA is resistant to several types of common antibiotics and can become deadly if it gets through the skin and into the bloodstream.

Two bugs had VRE, or vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, a less dangerous form of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Both germs are often seen in hospitals, and experts have been far more worried about nurses and other health care workers spreading the bacteria than insects.
It's not clear if the bacteria originated with the bedbugs or if the bugs picked it up from already infected people, Romney added.

The study was released Wednesday by Emerging Infectious Diseases, a publication of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Arnold Schwarzenegger And Maria Shriver Have Split!

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have separated after 25 years of being married together! This news upsets us for reasons beyond our comprehension. Perhaps it’s because whatever happened with other Hollywood couples, Arnie and Maria always seemed solid and to stuck together. 25 years is no joke! They’ve also released a joint statement that reads, “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship. We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and center of both of our lives. We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment.” But, GUYS. This is just so sad!

Maria’s already moved out, so this is something that has been planned for a while. We’re trying to figure out what this means? Is this a precursor to divorce? That word hasn’t been used, quite deliberately we think! But separation after spending more than two decades together seems pretty final. We hope no mudslinging comes out of this split.

You're Richer Than You May Realize

You may be a lot wealthier than you think. Most people look at their 401(k) or other retirement plan, add in the value of other assets — their home, other investments, savings, etc. — then subtract their debt to get their net worth. After the housing-market bust and the bear-market rout of recent years, that number may look painfully small.

But what's the value of you? That is, how much are your future paychecks worth? That number is your "human capital" — and some experts say it should be a key part of your overall financial planning.

Human capital "is anything that's going to generate a cash flow that isn't your investments," said Moshe Milevsky, a professor of finance at York University in Toronto.

"It's your ability to work, your ability to get a bonus, to get overtime. It's a gold mine and an oil well, but you're producing the gold and the oil," he said. "It's millions of dollars when you're in your 20s."

As you age, your financial assets increase and your human capital — the value of your future earnings — decreases, because you have fewer working years ahead. While your human capital is not cash in hand, it's an asset that should be protected and managed just like other assets in your portfolio, Milevsky and others said.

Still, while the concept of human capital has existed for decades and has generated interest among economists and finance experts, there's no guarantee your local financial planner embraces the idea. "Human capital is not as appreciated as it should be," said Andrew Sieg, head of retirement services at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. At a recent panel discussion on retirement risks facing young people, Sieg and others raised the concept repeatedly.

"Almost no [financial planning] tools factor human capital into retirement planning," Sieg said.

Milevsky, who also is president of Toronto-based wealth-planning company QWeMA Group, offers a free tool for measuring human capital.

Goalgami.com is a free planning tool that incorporates the idea of a household balance sheet. Goalgami's maker, Advisor Software of Lafayette, Calif., makes financial-planning software for professional advisers that "can deliver a certain amount of precision to the human-capital calculation," said Neal Ringquist, president of Advisor Software.

However, a future job switch or other change may render "that level of precision meaningless," he said. Thus, "we use the household balance sheet to capture the impact of the level of human capital on the household financial circumstances. "It's how those numbers fit into the overall financial picture of the household that is relevant."

Diversify, Protect

Whether or not you gauge your future earnings' value, the human-capital concept implies a more immediate task: Reassess whether your portfolio is diversified. For instance, if you work in the technology industry, then you might want to dial down your investments in tech stocks.

"You work for an auto company? Your financial portfolio shouldn't have auto stocks in it," Milevsky said.

And there are other ways to diversify these days, said Robert Johnson, senior managing director of the CFA Institute, which awards the chartered financial analyst designation. "The growth of exchange-traded funds aimed at specific sectors makes the task of diversifying your human capital easier," he said. "Now you can short these ETFs... it's much easier to isolate that exposure now," he said. "There are ETFs [for] virtually every sector."

Still, some say investors should proceed carefully. "Perhaps a career in financial services might lead you to lower your allocation to financial-services stocks," said Mackey McNeill, president of Mackey Advisors, a financial planning firm in Covington, Ky.

But "rarely would I suggest someone skip an asset class altogether based on their career," she said. A real-estate professional, for example, might reduce his exposure to real-estate investment trusts, or REITs, she said, but might still consider investing in foreign real estate.

Another task: Protect your human capital with life insurance (if you have dependents) and disability insurance.

"If we were as focused on human capital as we should be, [everyone] would have disability insurance," Sieg said.

That's because, given the value of your paycheck, you need to insure against its loss. Just over one-fourth of today's 20-year-olds will become disabled before age 67, according to the Social Security Administration.

Also, your human capital may help you decide whether to go back to school. Investing in your human capital may give you the option to work more years, Milevsky said.

Others agreed. "I have a 76-year-old client who is beginning her fourth career," McNeill said. But assessing the return on educational investment is key before taking on debt. "You have to look at what you will spend on your education and what are the likely [salary] outcomes," she said.

Part of the Plan

While many financial planners may not overtly embrace the concept of human capital, a client's expected future income is included in the planning process.

Michael Eisenberg, a certified public accountant and personal financial specialist in Los Angeles, said he asks clients about their current job and income, and asks them to assess the long-term viability of their job.

"We normally take their cost of expenses now and factor in a 3% inflation factor. That gives you the needs down the road," Eisenberg said.

Financial planning in a nutshell, he said, is "here's what you're going to spend, here's what you need to bring in to spend that, how do we plan to get you there?" he said. "Unfortunately, nobody can say that whatever it is they're doing today they're going to continue doing five years from now."

Advisers don't necessarily use the term "human capital," said Johnson of the CFA Institute. "When you're a CFA charter-holder you are charged with taking an individual's circumstances, their personal circumstances and their financial position into account and part of that is your future earnings stream," he said. "That is a part of doing financial planning, of putting together appropriate portfolios and giving advice for clients."

The CFP Board, which grants the certified financial planner designation, has a similar take.

"The concept of 'human capital' is not directly identified in the current or upcoming exam blueprint," said Dan Drummond, spokesman with the CFP Board. But "the concept is indirectly covered" when assessing factors that affect clients, "particularly regarding earning potential and its economic value to the planning process."

Financial planners also incorporate the idea of human capital when they help clients prepare for the possibility of disability, and whether someone's skill sets would be transferable to another profession or career, Drummond said.

U.S.: Osama bin Laden is dead, his body has been recovered

Osama bin Laden is dead and his body has been recovered by U.S. authorities, U.S. officials
said on Sunday.

U.S. President Barack Obama was to make the dramatic announcement shortly in a hastily called, late-night appearance at the White House.

The al-Qaida leader was killed at a mansion outside the Pakistani capital Islamabad, CNN reported on Sunday.

A senior U.S. counterterrorism official said bin Laden was killed in a ground operation in Pakistan, not by a Predator drone. The official said it happened last week. A Senior Pakistani intelligence official has confirmed that bin Laden was in fact killed in Pakistan.

It is a major accomplishment for Obama and his national security team. Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, had repeatedly vowed to bring to justice the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, but never did before leaving office in early 2009.

U.S. officials said that after searching in vain for the al-Qaida leader since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001, the Saudi-born extremist is dead and his body recovered.

Having the body may help convince any doubters that bin Laden is really dead.

He had been the subject of a search since he eluded U.S. soldiers and Afghan militia forces in a large-scale assault on the Tora Bora mountains in 2001. The trail quickly went cold after he disappeared and many intelligence officials believed he had been hiding in Pakistan.

While in hiding, bin Laden had taunted the West and advocated his militant Islamist views in videotapes spirited from his hideaway.

Besides Sept. 11, Washington has also linked bin Laden to a string of attacks -- including the 1998 bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the 2000 bombing of the warship USS Cole in Yemen.

Amber Rose Reality Show Denied By VH1

Amber Rose does not have a reality series on VH1 called “Behind The Shades” as she has stated, at least not yet.

A representative from VH1 told MTV News that they have no information on a reality show from Kanye West’s ex-girlfriend at this time.

However, other sources has told us that the former Ford model and stripper has shot a pilot for a reality series that she is shopping around to multiple networks, but the series has not yet been picked up.

Rose revealed details of her would be series to Vibe.com when asked about the sunglass shop she plans on opening. “I have a reality show that’s gonna come out on VH1,” Rose said. “I start filming early June. So that’s going to be incorporated in the show.

The shop isn’t up right now. You’ll see the process I have to go through to in order to.it’s not really easy to get a store and get people to come. My show’s gonna be an open book of my life, my family, my businesses. It’s called ‘Behind Her Shades’ because I usually have shades on, and it’s everything that’s behind them that people don’t know about but they’ll learn and part of that is my shade shop.”

Rose plans to sell vintage frames, her own line of sunglasses and women’s accessories in her shop when it opens and also mentioned that she is working on a writing an inspirational book based on how she grew up in Philadelphia. When her current boyfriend Wiz Khalifa appeared on RapFix Live she gushed about what attracted her to him, besides his rhymes. “He’s really funny, he’s really charming,” Rose said. “I didn’t know much about his music at first. Obviously he became a good friend and I began listening to his music and we became really close. He’s just awesome, he’s talented, he’s amazing.”
