Teens say they would stop communicating without social media outlets

18% of teens would stop communicating altogether if their favorite social networks shut down. That’s according to a recent survey of American high school and college students by email marketing company AWeber. According to the survey, 90% of teens are on Facebook, and an astounding 93% of teenagers use mobile phones -– the same amount that use email. 74% of teens are YouTube users, and 47% use Skype to keep up with others. Facebook and Email own almost equal parts of teens’ hearts. With teenagers going for both when they wake up in the morning, while they’re in class, and even while they’re on vacation. 6% of teens thought they might replace their cell phones with a landline or writing more letters if mobile phones suddenly became unavailable. A whopping 18%, however, thought they would stop communicating altogether if their favorite channel of communication disappeared. Check out the infographic below for a closer look. What would you do if your favorite social network suddenly closed? Let us know in the comments.

Marine boxer hopes unique style will garner Olympic gold

LONDON (Army News Service, July 26, 2012) -- After leading the U.S. boxing team in warm-ups Thursday, Marine Corps Sgt. Jamel Herring demonstrated the unique style and speed that may earn him an Olympic medal. "I'm definitely an underdog here," said Herring, a light welterweight who surprised several opponents at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials with quick footwork and his ability to dodge punches. "It's like a hit and run. It's like a game of tag -- I'm hitting, and I'm gone." "The minute you get frustrated, I'm right back on you." Herring will be the first U.S. Marine boxer to climb into an Olympic boxing ring in 20 years. He said coaches sometimes compare him to "Sugar Ray" Leonard, who won Olympic gold at the 1976 games while fighting in the light-welterweight division. He said Leonard danced like Muhammad Ali -- avoiding punches and coming in for the knock-out. "Speed creates power," Herring said. Brazil's Everton Lopes, however, is the reigning world champion in the light-welterweight division and England's Thomas Stalker is the division's number one-ranked boxer. "The odds are definitely not with us," said USA head boxing coach retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Basheer Abdullah, who added that all of his athletes have a fighting chance in London. "You can't bet against this guy," Abdullah said. "There were a lot of people who didn't think he was going to win in the trials and he proved them wrong." The coach said Herring demonstrates good team leadership and is one of the squad's three team captains. "You'll see Jamel out front most of the time," Abdullah said "That's a good NCO (noncommissioned officer)." On Thursday, Herring led the team in warm-up exercises before participating in a number of agility and sparring drills around the mats with trainers such as U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program assistant coach Staff Sgt. Joseph Guzman, who also boxed for Abdullah. "Jamel's a good mover," Guzman said. "He has good strong legs. He boxes on the move. At times, he frustrates his opponents with the movement because his opponents never get a chance to set. By the time they want to throw a punch, he's already over here on the other side." Herring said the Marine Corps immensely helped him, in terms of discipline. "I try to bring that Corps discipline to the athletes," Herring said. "Some of them are only 18 or 19 years old." Herring, 26, said the Marine Corps helped him mature and that he has the respect of other boxers on Team USA. He said the Corps instilled him with a determination to "never give up," and that may be what takes him past the hurdles of the coming week. Whatever happens, it won't be as tough as the fight in Fallujah, said Herring, who served in Iraq during 2005 and again in 2007. Herring has been boxing for about 11 years, but he realizes that he's still a relative unknown in the ring. "People don't think I have enough international experience and they don't give me a chance," Herron said. "It actually takes the pressure off me. I'd actually like to just come out of nowhere and win it all." The day of the Olympic Opening Ceremony in London will mark the third anniversary of the death of Herring's daughter, Ariyanah, who died of SIDS. Her memory, he says, will be his inspiration for the London Games. The first Olympic light-welterweight bouts are scheduled for Sunday.

Top Hotel Complaints By Travelers

Are you paying more for your hotel room and enjoying it less? If so, you’re not alone. A new survey shows travelers are fed up with poor service, long lines and surly staff members. They’re especially unhappy about lousy Internet connections – and being forced to pay extra for them. These are among the results of the annual J.D. Power & Associates report released Wednesday (today). The survey, which charts hotel guest satisfaction in North America, indicates the industry has a long way to go to make us happy. Much of our dissatisfaction stems from downsizing, say experts. Many companies fired staff and put off renovations when the economy soured, according to Jessica McGregor, senior account manager in the global travel and hospitality practice for J.D. Power. Although these hotel companies now have raised rates, they haven’t restored staffing to previous levels or moved ahead with improvements. “It’s not enough to raise rates and offer the same service as before,” McGregor said. “They need to make sure they have service-oriented staffs that will treat guests better and personalize their stays.” A lack of staff translates into long lines at check-in counters—a major gripe expressed in this year’s survey, and long waits when ordering in restaurants or from room service. McGregor said the thing that angers hotel guests most, however, is the Internet, which she described as a flashpoint for today’s travelers. People want to use WiFi in their hotel rooms and don’t want to be charged for it. They also want it to work well. But often it doesn’t. Today’s travelers carry many devices—computers, cell phones, tablets—and need to be able to connect with all them. “Band-width is a continuing problem,” says McGregor. Hotel staff members “can’t tell people in the morning that they can’t shower because there’s no hot water left. They can’t tell people after dinner that there’s no Internet because a lot of people are online then.” But, in addition to listing the negatives, the report charts the hotel chains travelers like best. Among them is a seven-time winner: Drury Hotels, which has made the top of the list seven years straight. Drury, a family-owned group of 120 hotels in the Midwest and South, has modest rates, and manages to give guests a lot for their money. The chain’s motto is “The extras aren’t extra” and guests can depend on free hot breakfasts, WiFi and an early-evening gathering with hot appetizers and beverages. Ritz-Carlton, which has topped the list in the luxury category three times, manages to personalize its service and has gone to great lengths to offer excellent Internet connections, said McGregor. A complete list of the top scorers in the poll, includes: Ritz-Carlton (luxury); Omni (upper upscale); Hilton Garden Inn & SpringHill Suites (tied in upscale); Holiday Inn (midscale full service); Drury Hotels (midscale limited service); Jameson Inn (economy/budget); and Homewood Suites (extended stay). The survey, titled "2012 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study," is in its 16th year and is based on responses gathered between August 2011 and May 2012 from more than 61,700 hotel guests from the United States and Canada. Overall guest satisfaction in 2012 declined to 757 on a 1,000-point scale, down seven index points from 2011.

Man refuses to leave jail; cited for trespassing and sent back to prison

Rodney Dwayne Valentine had just been granted his freedom from the Rockingham County jail in northern North Carolina on Saturday morning. But when Valentine refused to leave the prison, police arrested him for trespassing and sent him back to his cell. The News & Record of Greensboro reports that Valentine, 37, reportedly refused to leave the jail site, after authorities declined his request for a ride to a local motel. He had been in prison since May 22 on a charge of damage to personal property. Officers reportedly suggested that Valentine simply take a cab to the hotel, but he allegedly refused. When he still hadn't left the premises that afternoon, Deputies charged Valentine with second-degree trespassing. And now, Valentine is being held on a $500 bond while he awaits a scheduled court appearance on August 9.

Attacks across Pakistan Saturday killed at least 19 people. In the deadliest attack, authorities say a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the compound of militant commander Mullah Nabi in the town of Spin Tal. Nine of the dead were killed in that attack. The town is in northwestern Pakistan, near the Afghan border. Nabi is a rival to another prominent commander, who is allied with the Pakistani Taliban. Police say a roadside bomb exploded elsewhere in the country's northwest, killing at least three people. Meanwhile, gunmen attacked troops in southern Baluchistan province's port town of Gwadar, killing at least seven soldiers. VoA.

STOCKTON, Calif.—Three men are facing murder and attempted murder charges in a shootout with Stockton police during which another suspect was killed. The Record of Stockton reports http://bit.ly/Mb1a3y that Darold Jarvis and Kevin Ou, both 24, and 19-year-old Darance Leav were arraigned on Wednesday. Authorities say the three along with 27-year-old Joseph Brooks opened fire at a house last week, wounding a 70-year-old woman, before leading law enforcement officials on a high-speed chase that ended in a gun battle when their van spun out. Brooks was shot and killed. Jarvis was shot in the arm. The three defendants are facing a murder charge for allegedly provoking Brooks' death. All three are also facing gang enhancements.

Boy dies after sand tunnel collapse in New Jersey

A 12-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital after a sand tunnel collapsed on him at a New Jersey beach has died. The boy and his brother were digging a tunnel at the Long Branch, N.J., beach late Tuesday when it collapsed on him, trapping him under the sand, police and witnesses said. Lifeguards pulled the boy out of the sand and began administering CPR. He was unconscious "with blood trickling from his nose," a witness told the Ashbury Park Press. The boy was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was placed in the pediatric intensive care unit. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday afternoon, hospital officials told the paper. According to NBCNewYork.com, a fire truck responding to the tunnel collapse struck a man holding his infant son, "knocking them both to the ground." Both were taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, NBC said. The father suffered broken limbs; the baby was "injured but not severely." Sadly, deaths from sand tunnel collapses are not terribly uncommon. According to CBS News, there were at least 16 beach-hole-related deaths between 1990 and 2010. According to a 2007 report in the New England Journal of Medicine—"Sudden Death from Collapsing Sand Holes"—there were 31 over a 20-year span. "At least once a day, lifeguards have to stop someone from digging a hole too deep," a lifeguard told the North County (Calif.) Times after an 18-year-old man nearly suffocated in a sand tunnel collapse. "Holes are a hazard for everyone who uses the beach." Author: Dylan Stableford

'Most wanted' fugitive caught in Cancun

One of the U.S. Marshals Service's 15 most wanted fugitives has been captured in the Mexican beach town of Cancun after 24 years on the run. Vincent Legrend Walters, 45, was apprehended early Friday morning and is being held on an extradition request. Walters, who faces murder, drugs and weapons charges, hid in plain sight and reportedly boasted he was a wanted fugitive, according to the U.S. Marshals Office. Walters used the alias Oscar Rivera and worked at Cancun International Airport, officials said. Walters has been on the run since 1988 after he allegedly purchased $20,000 worth of chemicals from undercover agents to make methamphetamine and negotiated an additional $200,000 deal with them, the U.S. Marshals Service said. When his associate became uncomfortable holding onto the finished methamphetamine, he gave it to a San Diego dealer who passed it on to the dealer's friend, Jay Bareno. When Walters tracked down the dealer and demanded the drugs be returned, he told him they were gone. Walters and his brother, Martin, allegedly kidnapped the dealer and his girlfriend, and offered the couple to Bareno in exchange for the drugs. The men made the exchange, but the female hostage died, having gagged on a chemically saturated rag that authorities said "killed her almost instantaneously." Martin Walters was captured soon after the crimes and was convicted of kidnapping and murder. He is serving 25 years to life in prison.

Internet blackout looms for thousands: What you need to know

Thousands of computer users may lose Internet access on Monday, when the deadline for a temporary fix to a malicious software scam shut down by the FBI last year expires. What is it? Millions of computers were infected with the so-called "Internet Doomsday" virus used in the hacking scam, which redirected Internet searches through DNS servers used by the scammers. (Who, in turn, allegedly netted $14 million in bogus advertising revenue.) After U.S. and Estonian authorities busted the malware ring last November, a federal judge ordered that the FBI use temporary servers while the malware victims' PCs were repaired. The temporary servers will shut down at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Monday, meaning anyone using a computer still infected with the virus will likely lose Internet access. "Connectivity will be lost to the Internet PERIOD," Symantec, the online security firm, said in a blog post. "If your computer is still using DNS entries that are pointing to the FBI servers on July 9, you will lose TOTAL access to the Internet. No connecting to the office from home, no updating Facebook, nothing until the DNS settings are fixed." How many computers have it? It's unclear how widespread the "blackout" will be. According to a working group set up by security experts, more than 300,000 computers remained infected as of June 11, including 69,000 in the United States. Last week, 245,000 computers were said to be still infected with the so-called Alureon virus, according online security firm Deteque, including 45,355 U.S. machines. Wired estimates 64,000 U.S. users and an additional 200,000 users outside the United States are still infected with the malware, "despite repeated warnings in the news, e-mail messages sent by ISPs and alerts posted by Google and Facebook." According to Internet Identity, another IT security firm, "12 percent of all Fortune 500 companies and four percent of 'major' U.S. federal agencies are still infected with DNSChanger malware." But it's also unclear how many of those machines are still in use. What you can do According to Reuters, U.S. Internet providers including AT&T and Time Warner Cable "have made temporary arrangements so that their customers will be able to access the Internet using the address of the rogue DNS servers." And the problem, security experts say, is relatively easy to fix. "It's a very easy one to fix," Gunter Ollmann, vice president of research for security company Damballa, told the news service. "There are plenty of tools available." Online security firms, Facebook and the FBI are offering free diagnostic checks for users whose computers may be infected. "Monday morning," Alabama's WAAY-TV reported last week, "hundreds of thousands of Internet enthusiasts could wake up to find nothing but a dark, empty computer screen." The media hype over a potential "blackout" threatens "to obscure what has been a highly successful effort--one of few to date--to stamp out a global online scam and malware infestation," Paul Roberts wrote on Threatpost.com. Six people were arrested in Estonia and charged with Internet fraud in the sting. A seventh, who was living in Russia, remains at large.

Man Who Shot Trae The Truth & Murdered 3 Others Arrested

A 25-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a shooting that killed three people and injured two others, including local rapper Trae Tha Truth. Feanyichi Uvukansi went in for questioning Wednesday morning and told loved ones he was surprised to learn that he was a suspect. His criminal past includes multiple drug and assault charges. The fatal shooting happened on June 20 outside the Diamonds Gentlemen’s Club, which was formerly Scores Cabaret. Coy “Poppa C” Thompson, 23, was killed outside the club around 3:15 a.m., along with 30-year-old Erica Rochelle Dotson and 31-year-old Carlos Durell Dorsey. The shooting happened after a performance by an associate of Thompson’s, ABN rapper Trae Tha Truth. Trae, 31, whose legal name is Frazier Othel Thompson, and 37-year-old Willie Watkins were also shot, but their injuries were not life-threatening, police said. The suspect reportedly opened fire as patrons were leaving the show. Investigators said Poppa C was involved in a domestic dispute on June 17, 2012, and had received threats on his life. They believe Trae, Dorsey, Dotson and Watkins were all struck by gunfire intended for Poppa C. A source close to the investigation said Dotson, a mother of three, had just asked for Trae’s autograph when she was killed. Uvukansi faces capital murder charges and was being held without bond.

Teens More Willing to Undergo Plastic Surgery

It’s not news that many young people don’t like the way they look, but a new survey has revealed that around two in 10 teens worldwide would be willing to undergo plastic surgery. In the United States, only seven percent of the girls surveyed and 21 percent of the boys surveyed were proud their bodies. In both groups, teens were least proud of their bellies, bottoms, and chests and most proud of their eyes, hair, and skin While percentages and the body parts teens cared about varied country to country, the findings were similar across the board. Compared to the global average, American teens were actually less likely to look to the nip and tuck to change appearances. Fifteen percent of American youth have considered plastic surgery, whereas 19 percent of youth surveyed worldwide would consider an aesthetic operation. Brazil was the nation whose teens were most likely to turn to the knife to change looks. About half of the young women and 34 percent of the young men would consider surgery as a method of change. “The current generation of youth is often referred to by scientists as the most narcissistic group ever”, says Joeri Van den Bergh, a Generation Y expert at InSites Consulting, the firm that conducted the survey. “It is not surprising that looking good is so important, but this definitely is not only valid for youngsters and is a broader scientific fact.” The survey was conducted among 4,065 respondents aged 15 to 25 in 16 countries: the USA, Brazil, Russia, India, China, the UK, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Romania, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium.
