15 Health Facts You May Just Not Know

Once again, R.E.A.L is here to reveal some interesting but realistic facts about your overall health and well-being. From eating, to exercising, to sex, to tanning, we’ve got all the eye-opening facts! 1. Getting in your fruits and veggies can help the body produce its own form of Aspirin. After a study done by the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, participants who ate fruit and vegetables containing benzoic acid, could produce their own salicyclic acid. This is the main ingredient in aspirin that makes aspirin an anti-inflammatory pain reliever. 2. Watching yourself in a mirror while running on a treadmill, will make your workout go faster. 3. Honey can soothe a hangover. 4. Garlic can help cure athlete’s foot. 5. Baking soda helps whiten teeth. 6. Your kitchen sink is dirtier than your bathroom sink. There are approximately 500,000 bacteria lurking around your drain alone. Over 50 million bacteria in a single colony can live on one sponge. 7. Using a diary for weight-loss purposes can double a person’s weight loss efforts. 8. Sexologists can determine a woman’s orgasm history, solely by the way she walks. 9. Oatmeal, citrus fruits, and honey can improve your sex drive, and boost fertility. Oats produce a chemical that sends testosterone into the blood stream, which then increases orgasm and sex drive as a result. Vitamin C in citrus fruits ups a males’ sperm count, and Vitamin B found in honey helps the body produce estrogen which is key for arousal and blood flow. 10. Walking either in water, against the wind, or wearing a backpack burns approximately 50 more calories an hour. 11. Regular exercise can lower a women’s cancer risk, but only if she is getting an efficient amount of sleep. 12. Rinsing your nose with salt water can help fight allergies. Dr. Melissa Pynnonen from the Michigan sinus center says that nasal irrigation is an inexpensive way to find relief from allergies, stuffy nose, and nasal congestions. 13. After a study done at Cornell University, researchers found that people who enter their homes through an entry way that is close to the kitchen tend to eat 15% more than those who enter farther away from the kitchen. 14. Smokers are four times more likely to experience feelings of restlessness after a night’s sleep than non-smokers.

Iowa father tries to forcibly remove son from game for poor grades

As reported by the Iowa City Press-Citizen -- and brought to Prep Rally's attention by Larry Brown Sports -- a man named Benjamin I.H. Doyle was charged with a trespass violation after he ran onto the soccer field at Longfellow Elementary School and attempted to forcibly remove his son from the ongoing City High soccer game. Police officers on the scene rapidly removed Doyle from the field and questioned him about the incident. When asked why he ran onto the field, Doyle — who is listed as a database administrator for the University of Iowa's Hospital Information Systems — said that his son's grades were too poor for him to be allowed to play soccer.

Stockton,Ca Mayor Expresses Concern Most Arrested in Sweep Released

Mayor Ann Johnston told KCRA3 she is concerned that a majority of those arrested in a crime crackdown this past weekend have already been released from jail. "This is not what I expected," Johnston told KCRA3's Mike TeSelle. San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Robert Himelblau told KCRA earlier this week that it "welcomed the arrests" and "had a high degree of confidence a majority of the arrests would lead to prosecution. Does Plies & Kirk Franklin look alike to you?

Are we the only ones that think this?

Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes passes away!

The great author had won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize and the Latin Literary Prize. In July, Dalkey Archive Press will publish his novel, Vlad. They also published his books Terra Nostra, Where the Air Is Clear, and Distant Relations. Here is an excerpt from his novel, Inez: “We shall have nothing to say in regard to our own death.” For a long time this sentence had been going around and around in the aged maestro’s head. He did not dare write it down. He was afraid that consigning it to paper would make it real, with fateful consequences. He would have nothing more to say after that: the dead man does not know what death is, but neither do the living. For that reason the sentence that haunted him like a verbal ghost was both sufficient and insufficient. It said everything, but at the price of never saying anything again.

Indonesia Airplane Missing: Russian-Made Plane Loses Contact

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A new Russian-made civilian plane carrying 50 people went missing in Indonesia while flying over mountains Wednesday during a demonstration flight for potential buyers and journalists, officials said. Search and rescue teams were heading to the area just south of the capital, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation. Bad weather, however, forced at least two helicopters to turn back. The Sukhoi Superjet-100 took off from Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at 2:21 p.m. (0721 GMT). It dropped off the radar 21 minutes later near the Salak mountain range, after the crew asked air traffic control for permission to descend from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet (3,000 meters to 1,800 meters). No explanation was given for the sudden change of course. Though drizzling at the time, it was not stormy. "I saw a big plane passing just over my house," Juanda, a villager who lives near the 7,200-foot- (2,200-meter)- mountain, told the local station TVOne. "It was veering a bit to one side, the engine roaring," she said. "It seemed to be heading toward Salak, but I didn't hear an explosion or anything." Rear Marshal Daryatmo, chief of the national search and rescue agency, said several diplomats from the Russian Embassy, potential buyers from major Indonesian airlines and journalists were on board what was supposed to be a 50-minute demonstration flight – the second of the day. Together with the Russian crew, the plane was carrying 50 people, said Sunaryo, from PT Trimarga Rekatama, the company that was responsible for the guest list. Like many Indonesians, both Sunaryo and Daryatmo use only one name. Though the air search was called off by early evening, soldiers, police and members of the air force had joined the land-based rescue efforts. They were expected to continue through the night, but the terrain was rough and difficult to navigate after darkness fell. "Hopefully they'll be able to reach the location tonight," Daryatmo said. Developed by the Russian aerospace company Sukhoi in co-operation with Western partners, the plane is the first completely new airliner designed by Russia since the Soviet collapse. Russia has hoped that the short- to mid-range jet, which made its maiden run in 2008, would help it break into international markets dominated by Boeing and Airbus. It was on the fourth stop of a six-nation "Welcome Asia!" road show after having already been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan. It was supposed to head next to Laos and Vietnam.

Joggers Live Longer, Study Says

THURSDAY, May 3 (HealthDay News) -- Jogging regularly could add about six years to your life, a new Danish study suggests. "The results of our research allow us to definitively answer the question of whether jogging is good for your health," Peter Schnohr, chief cardiologist of the long-term Copenhagen City Heart Study, said in a news release from the European Society of Cardiology. "We can say with certainty that regular jogging increases longevity. The good news is that you don't actually need to do that much to reap the benefits." In conducting the study, the researchers compared the mortality of joggers and non-joggers who took part in the population study of 20,000 people aged 20 to 93 that began in 1976. In making their comparison, they asked 1,116 male joggers and 762 women joggers about their jogging routine, including how fast and how long they jogged weekly. "With participants having such a wide age span we felt that a subjective scale of intensity was the most appropriate approach," explained Schnohr, who is based at Bispebjerg University Hospital, in Copenhagen. In the follow-up period of up to 35 years, the study found that 10,158 non-joggers and 122 joggers died. The researchers noted this was a 44 percent drop in the risk of death for male and female joggers. The researchers found that male joggers can extend their life by 6.2 years, and women by 5.6 years. Jogging at a slow pace for one to two and a half hours weekly provided the most significant benefits. "You should aim to feel a little breathless, but not very breathless," said Schnohr. "The relationship appears much like alcohol intakes. Mortality is lower in people reporting moderate jogging, than in non-joggers or those undertaking extreme levels of exercise." The study's authors noted there are several health benefits of jogging that contribute to increased life expectancy, including improvements in: Oxygen uptake Insulin sensitivity Lipid profiles (raising "good" HDL cholesterol and lowering triglycerides) Heart function Bone density Immune function Psychological function The improved psychological well-being may be due to the fact that people have more social interactions when they're out jogging, explained Schnohr. The researchers added that jogging also helps lower blood pressure, reduce platelet aggregation and prevent obesity. The study was slated for presentation Thursday at a meeting of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, called EuroPRevent2012, in Dublin. Data and conclusions presented at meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal. Relative: NY police captain saved son from blaze

CARMEL, N.Y. (AP) — A suburban New York police captain who died in a horrific house fire helped save his son and then ran back inside to try to rescue his wife and two teenage daughters before they all succumbed to the blaze, according to his brother-in-law. "Tommy Sullivan was a hero," Thomas Zielinski told Journal News after speaking to the surviving son. "After he got his son out, he ran back in to get the rest of the family." The son, 20-year-old Thomas Sullivan Jr., escaped by crawling down the stairs and out of the garage after being woken up by his father early Tuesday morning. He pulled the garage door open with a rope because the electricity was out. He told arriving police officers that his family was trapped inside their Carmel home, about 60 miles north of New York City. "He was screaming that there was fire in the house," said Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson. The other victims are believed to be Sullivan's wife, Donna, and his daughters, 18-year-old Meaghan and 13-year-old Mairead. "They were pretty well burned," ''It's very difficult to identify them without an autopsy and DNA," said Johnson. The son was treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital and released, said Vickie Zielinski, Donna Sullivan's sister-in-law. The blaze was so intense that it melted the siding of two nearby homes and prevented firefighters from entering, said Johnson. It took firefighters from several towns three hours to extinguish the flames. Video of the fire, posted on the website of the Journal News, showed the home being nearly entirely consumed by a fireball. The fire also melted plastic and paint on cars at the home. Officials were still looking for a cause into blaze. "Everything's being explored ... whether it was suspicious or not is still being investigated," Johnson said. Officials were able to find Sullivan's body on the rear deck, where Johnson said he apparently landed after jumping from the second floor. Sullivan was captain of the Larchmont Police Department. The fire, reported by a neighbor just before 2 a.m., left little behind of the family's home on a quiet street. Johnson said no 911 calls came from inside the house, which he said was equipped with multiple wired smoke detectors. None sent any alarm to a monitoring station. Sullivan was a former New York police officer assigned to the Bronx who had left the city for the comparatively tranquil suburbs two decades ago because he felt he could make a bigger difference in a smaller community. "We are devastated, the village of Larchmont as a whole," said Larchmont Police Chief John Poleway, who said Sullivan was "full of integrity, honesty, he was dedicated to family." Sullivan's daughters were students at Carmel High School. Mairead was a freshman and Meaghan a senior. "The school community is devastated," said the district's superintendent, James Ryan. "We are working together in this very difficult time to offer support to students and staff." Principal Kevin Carroll said the girls "were good students and nice kids." "Obviously today their teachers were very upset, and of course the other students," he said, adding that school psychologists were following the girls' class schedules to see the children who would be most upset. He said that many of the students knew of the fire by the time they got to school, and that administrators made an official announcement at 7:10 a.m. "It was very quiet for the most part," Carroll said of the school's atmosphere. "There was something in the air." A funeral was planned for Saturday morning at St. James the Apostle Church in Carmel. Viewing will be at the Balsamo-Cordovano Funeral Home in Carmel; hours have not yet been scheduled. Author: Jom Fitzgerald (AP)
