Pacific Avenue store robbed

STOCKTON - A man robbed a store in the 5900 block of Pacific Avenue about 9 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. Witnesses told officers the man entered the store and asked to see the manager about a product, police said. As the manager was assisting him, the man acted as though he had a gun and demanded money from the register, authorities said. Employees handed over cash, and the man fled on foot toward Pacific Avenue. The robber was described as a black man 20 to 24 years old standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 180 to 200 pounds and wearing a black sweatshirt, black sweat pants, a black hat with a red brim and a black and white Nike duffel bag.

3 found dead in Calif. apartment blaze; 3 injured

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A couple and their granddaughter were killed and three others were injured — including a police officer credited with saving at least one person — in a late-night fire at a Northern California apartment complex, authorities said Sunday. The officer and firefighters called to the complex shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday found people trapped in an apartment on the second floor of the building, San Jose Fire Department Capt. Mary Gutierrez said. The police officer, who has not been named, entered the burning apartment and pulled at least one person to safety, Gutierrez said. "He was one of the first on the scene," Gutierrez said. "He had a fire extinguisher, entered the burning apartment and performed at least one rescue. He got somebody out of that burning apartment." After firefighters put the fire out, the bodies of a man, a woman and a child were recovered, Gutierrez said. A woman who escaped the fire told the San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/12Rk1Kp ) she lost her parents, Bulmaro and Mariana Maldonado, and 4-year-old daughter Kyra in the blaze. "I just woke up, and the room was on fire," Cecilia Maldonado said. The police officer was one of three people taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Gutierrez said. She did not know the condition of the officer or of the two other people hospitalized. Their names have not been released, and San Jose police did not immediately return a call seeking information about the officer.

China debuts another High Speed Train

BEIJING (AP) — China on Wednesday opened the world's longest high-speed rail line that more than halves the time required to travel from the country's capital in the north to Guangzhou, an economic hub in southern China. The opening of the 2,298 kilometer (1,428 mile)-line was commemorated by the 9 a.m. departure of a train from Beijing for Guangzhou. Another train left Guangzhou for Beijing an hour later. China has massive resources and considerable prestige invested in its showcase high-speed railways program. But it has in recent months faced high-profile problems: part of a line collapsed in central China after heavy rains in March, while a bullet train crash in the summer of 2011 killed 40 people. The former railway minister, who spearheaded the bullet train's construction, and the ministry's chief engineer, were detained in an unrelated corruption investigation months before the crash. Trains on the latest high-speed line will initially run at 300 kph (186 mph) with a total travel time of about eight hours. Before, the fastest time between the two cities by train was more than 20 hours.

Afghan policewoman kills US adviser in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan policewoman walked into a high-security compound in Kabul Monday and killed an American contractor with a single bullet to the chest, the first such shooting by a woman in a spate of insider attacks by Afghans against their foreign allies. Afghan officials who provided details identified the attacker as police Sgt. Nargas, a mother of four with a clean record. The shooting was outside the police headquarters in a walled compound which houses the governor's office, courts and a prison in the heart of the capital. A police official said she was able to enter the compound armed because she was licensed to carry a weapon as a police officer.

Dental Assistant Fired For Being "Irresistible" Is Devastated

After working as a dental assistant for ten years, Melissa Nelson was fired for being too "irresistible" and a "threat" to her employer's marriage. "I think it is completely wrong," Nelson said. "I think it is sending a message that men can do whatever they want in the work force." On Friday, the all-male Iowa State Supreme Court ruled that James Knight, Nelson's boss, was within his legal rights when he fired her, affirming the decision of a lower court.

Taste Test: Low-Cost Olive Oil Bests Pricier Brands

The best olive oil for finishing salads or drizzling over pasta might not be the most expensive -- and that's not just our wallets talking. Cheapism convened a panel of tasters to put five oils to a blind test, and they favored relatively inexpensive Goya over higher-priced bottles in our olive oil review. 1. Goya. This cheap olive oil, the only one made entirely from Spanish olives, won the title of best olive oil with its "citrusy" flavor and hint of pepper. It even impressed one Israeli taster who insisted that no supermarket oil could stand up to those of her home country. 2. Pompeian. Although its name implies Italy, the runner-up in our olive oil review is imported from a mix of countries. Its "bit of spiciness" and "taste of olives" appealed even to those who disliked the sharpness of the aftertaste. 3. Colavita. The olives for this oil come exclusively from Italy and produce a taste our panelists described as "smooth," "tangy," and "very clean." The flavor is "neutral" and "not too sharp," according to the testers, some of whom considered this a detriment. They found the oil boring compared with other, more strongly flavored oils. 4. Trader Joe's President's Reserve. While two testers had strong adverse reactions to the taste, some liked the "strong olive flavor" of this Italian import. The "acrid" aftertaste is what put them off. 5. Bertolli. This "balanced" and mild olive oil, made from olives imported from four countries, elicited no delight from our tasters, although they commented it would be "easy to use."

Bronx bred Latino rapper Fat Joe, born Joseph Cartagena, pleaded guilty to two counts of evading taxes on $3.7 million dollars of income. The 42-year-old rapper, known for his work with the late Big Pun, Terror Squad and many others, plead guilty in a federal courthouse in New Jersey. The rap star admitted that he evaded paying taxes, in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Although he is free currently on $250,000, bail, Fat Joe faces up to two years of jail time when his sentence is delivered in April. At that time he is also expected to face a $200,000 penalty, as unpaid taxes to the government totaled nearly $718,038, according to U.S. Attorney Paul S. Fishman.

Beyonce urged not to push Pepsi

An anti-soda group is pressing Beyonce to drop her $50 million endorsement deal with Pepsi. Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of Center for Science in the Public Interest, says, “By lending your name and image to PepsiCo, you are associating your positive attributes with a product that is quite literally sickening Americans.” According to the CSPI's report "Liquid Candy: How Soft Drinks Are Ruing America's Health," sodas such as Pepsi are a leading cause of childhood obesity in the U.S. And according to the Centers for Disease Control, sugar-sweetened drinks are the largest source of added sugar in youth diets, and childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years.

Knife-wielding man injures 22 children in China

BEIJING (Reuters) - A knife-wielding man slashed 22 children and an adult at an elementary school in central China on Friday, state media reported, the latest in a series of attacks on schoolchildren in the country. The man attacked the children at the gate of a school in Chenpeng village in Henan province, the Xinhua news agency reported. Police arrested a 36-year-old man, identified as villager Min Yingjun, Xinhua said. It did not give further details of the extent of the injuries. There have been a series of attacks on schools and schoolchildren around China in recent years, some by people who have lost their jobs or felt left out of the country's economic boom. The rash of violence has prompted public calls for more measures to protect the young in a country where many couples only have one child. In 2010, a man slashed 28 children, two teachers and a security guard in a kindergarten in eastern China.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ten people have been arrested as part of an investigation into international cybercrime rings that steal millions of computer users' credit card, bank account and other personal information, the FBI said. Individuals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, New Zealand, Peru, Britain and the U.S. were arrested in an operation carried out with the assistance of the Facebook social network and numerous international law enforcement agencies, the FBI said. The FBI said the operation identified international cybercrime rings that are linked to multiple variants of the Yahos malware, which is linked to more than 11 million compromised computer systems and over $850 million in losses through the so-called Butterfly botnet.

Young Frozen Inca Girl

Scientists examine a 15-year-old girl who lived in the Inca Empire, then was sacrificed and remained frozen for 500 years.... Unearthed in 1999 from the 22,000-foot summit of Mount Llullaillaco, a volcano 300 miles west of here near the Chilean border, their frozen bodies were among the best preserved mummies ever found, with internal organs intact, blood still present in the heart and lungs, and skin and facial features mostly unscathed. No special effort had been made to preserve them. The cold and the dry, thin air did all the work. They froze to death as they slept, and 500 years later still looked like sleeping children, not mummies.

Jenni Rivera Killed: Mexican-American Singer Was Aboard Plane that Crashed

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - A small plane carrying popular Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera went missing Sunday after taking off from the city of Monterrey, said authorities in northern Mexico. The mayor of the town of Iturbide in Nuevo Leon state, Jose Antonio Gonzalez, said a plane had been located in the municipality of Los Tejocotes, but it has not been confirmed that it is the plane Rivera was travelling in. Jorge Domene, spokesman for Nuevo Leon's government, said he didn't have any knowledge of her plane being found. Domene said the Rivera's plane left Monterrey about 3:30 a.m. local time after a concert there and aviation authorities lost contact with the craft about 10 minutes later. It had been scheduled to arrive in Toluca, which is located outside Mexico City, about an hour later. A search for the plane is under way with civilian protection agency helicopters flying over the state. Seven people including her publicist, lawyer, makeup artist and the flight crew were believed to be aboard the U.S.-registered Learjet 25, the ministry of transportation and communication said in a statement.

Actor Stephen Baldwin Charged in NY Tax Case

Actor Stephen Baldwin was charged Thursday with failing to pay New York state taxes for three years, amassing a $350,000 debt. Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said Baldwin, of Upper Grandview, skipped his taxes in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The youngest of the four acting Baldwin brothers pleaded not guilty at an arraignment and was freed without bail. His lawyer, Russell Yankwitt, said Baldwin should not have been charged. "Mr. Baldwin did not commit any crimes, and he's working with the district attorney's office and the New York State Tax Department to resolve any differences," Yankwitt said. The district attorney said Baldwin could face up to four years in prison if convicted. The actor is due back in court on Feb. 5. Zugibe said Baldwin owes more than $350,000 in tax and penalties.

A Northern California handyman was allegedly beaten and forced to do repairs around the home of two suspects who police say lured him to their home after a dispute about work he'd done for a relative of one of the alleged assailants. Jason DeJesus, 36, and Chanelle Troedson, 33, have been arrested on charges of suspicion of assault, kidnapping and false imprisonment after allegedly luring the unnamed man to their San Jose, Calif., home Monday. The couple held the man at their home for seven hours before he daringly escaped from a nearby gas station where they had taken him to buy supplies, police said. After some conflict between the victim and one of DeJesus' relatives, DeJesus requested the victim's presence at the house to conduct "repair work" on an appliance for them, Sgt. Jose Cardoza of the Santa Clara Sheriff's Office said.

And the most corrupt nation this year is....

It's a tie between Afghanistan, North Korea, and Somalia. Elsewhere, bankrupt Greece, one-party China, and various 'Arab Spring' nations stand out in Transparency International's annual rankings. • A daily summary of global reports on security issues. Corruption is a major threat across the globe, impacting citizen’s perceptions of their leaders and trust for their government, regardless of the level of development or economic ranking. Corruption can also play a role in political unrest, as seen around the world from the Middle East to China to Greece. Today, Transparency International released its Corruption Perceptions Index for 2012, measuring perceptions of how corrupt public sectors seem to be based on data sources from independent institutions in each country based on a period of 24 months. Transparency International notes that “levels of bribery, abuse of power and secret dealings are still very high in many countries.” Out of the 176 countries ranked in this year’s index, some two-thirds scored below 50, with zero indicating a perception of high levels of corruption and 100 indicating a perception of openness or clean dealings in the government. The US ranked 19th, up from 24th in 2011.

Justin Bieber Nearly Jeopardizes Missy Franklin's Amateur Status With This Gift

Little did he know it, but Justin Bieber nearly jeopardized the amateur career of one of the country's most talented swimmers. After Missy Franklin's superb performance this summer in the London Olympics -- the 17-year-old took home four gold medals -- the Canadian pop sensation sent her a care package of Bieber goods shortly after the Olympics. Franklin, a huge Bieber fan, was understandably thrilled to see the package. "Huge shout out to @justinbieber for sending me all this amazing stuff!!" Franklin tweeted at the time. "Thank you so much! Can't wait for the concert!" As it turns out, Bieber's seemingly innocuous gift could have derailed Franklin's amateur career. She explained her conundrum in an interview in ESPN The Magazine that was published online Monday. "It was really sweet of him," Franklin said. "But it was considered a form of special treatment that could have jeopardized my amateur status. I've given up way too much and sacrificed too much to keep a Justin Bieber T-shirt and lose it all. So I sent it back." It's unclear when Franklin actually returned Bieber's package, but it was likely very soon after she tweeted about it. Franklin's amateur status was a hot topic of conversation following the Olympics, and it would have been unwise for her to hold onto Bieber's gifts for too long. Indeed, months after receiving the package, Franklin committed to swim at Cal. The ESPN interview, which is published in the Dec. 10 edition of the magazine, appears to be the first place where Franklin acknowledged returning the gifts. So in addition to her four gold medals, Franklin now owns another prestigious distinction: "only teenage girl to ever return anything given to her by Justin Bieber."

Stockton police to go after drivers using hand-held cell phones

Stockton police will crack down on drivers who use hand-held cell phones over the next week and a half. The effort is a special federally funded pilot program using the region to test tactics that may be employed nationally in the future. Beginning November 30 and lasting through December 9, police will be out in force to issue tickets to drivers using hand-held cell phones or texting. It's part of a joint effort with California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the California Highway Patrol. "Talking or texting on a cell phone while driving on the streets of Stockton is dangerous to everyone on the roadways with them,” said Sgt. Lance Baur. "Officers will be out looking, and will be ticketing with zero tolerance." Drivers in Stockton talking on a hand-held cell phone or texting will receive a first-time ticket costing a minimum of $159, with a second offense costing $279. But the goal of the special enforcement operation is not to issue tickets, but to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. Across the nation in 2010, 3,092 people were killed, and an estimated 416,000 others were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.

REPORT: Rita Ora splits from Rob Kardashian

(WENN) - Rita Ora has split from Kim Kardashian's younger brother, according to a report. The signer initially played down rumours she was dating Rob Kardashian this summer, telling Complex magazine, "It's not really a relationship. It's not that intense. He's a cool guy. We're close. Kardashian fueled gossip in October by posting a picture of the pair kissing on his Twitter account, but now Britain's The Sun newspaper reports the pair has parted ways after struggling to find time for each other. A source tells the publication, "It's really sad - they really liked each other but with him living in L.A. and her over in London, it was becoming impossible to maintain a relationship. Online Shopping Strategy

When you’re shopping online, prices on everything from toilet paper to TVs could fluctuate several times a day. Dynamic pricing, a strategy that the travel industry has been using for years, is now being used online for many consumer goods. According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal… “Retailers on Amazon.com changed prices on a Samsung 43-inch plasma television four times over the course of a day, between $398 and $424″, according to price-tracking site Decide.com. Around midday, Best Buy boosted the price to $500 from $400 before dropping it back down, while electronics retailer Newegg in the morning raised its price to $600 from $500.” Basically do your homework on what your buying and you just might stumble across a great discount.

US Birth Rate Hits New Low

The rate of babies born in the United States hit a record low in 2011, a new analysis shows. Researchers say the drastic drop in the birth rate among immigrants has greatly contributed to the overall decrease. Based on preliminary data from the National Center for Health Statistics, the Pew Research Center calculated that the overall birth rate — the annual number of births per 1,000 women between 15 to 44 — was 63.2 last year. That's the lowest since such reliable record collection began in 1920 and close to half the birth rate in 1957, amid the Baby Boom years.

After an odd arrival in which a man rushed his SUV and ended up getting arrested by the Secret Service. It wasn't the start of a term as Romney had envisioned. But it was, at least, all on good terms with the man who defeated him, President Barack Obama. Over a private lunch on Thursday, Obama and Romney had some white turkey chili, Southwestern grilled chicken salad and – from the reports of it – the kind of actual conversation that never happens while two presidential nominees are bashing each other's ideas during a campaign.

Nicki Minaj's Wal-Mart "Ban" Explained

A Rocky Williform Company Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday Roman Re-Loaded: The Re-Up wasn't sold in huge retail chains like Target and Wal-Mart, and industry expert Keith Caulfield explained why. The situation is more or less about numbers--and the relative unpopularity of reissued albums. "Expanded reissues aren't always guaranteed big sellers. It really depends on the extra content and timing of the release ... Nicki's reissue was seemingly timed to profit from holiday shopping," Keith Caulfield, Billboard's associate director of charts and retail, told MTV News. But that doesn't mean that reissues don't ever sell well. "In the week Katy Perry reissued Teenage Dream, the combined sales of the reissue and the original album were 33,000," he said. "That was up 190 percent compared to the previous week." Author: Rayna Dean

Rihanna does not land Fast & Furious Movie Roll

Rita Ora will star in the sixth installment of the Fast and the Furious series, aptly titled, The Fast and The Furious 6. Even IMDB is stumped as to how this thing hasn’t died yet, but instead managed to rake in more and more cash. The 2013 film will be Ms. Ora’s big screen debut—unless you caught her in the 2004 U.K. crime flick, Spivs—and her unnamed character is a role apparently once coveted by none other than Rihanna. According to the U.K.’s The Sun, Ora charmed her way through auditions enough to leave casting directors comfortable offering her the part instead of the nomadic RiRi. McHale took a leave of absence to be with his daughter and family in Minneapolis on Nov. 10. Sasha McHale had battled lupus, an autoimmune disease, and was hospitalized with a related condition, according to the Houston Chronicle, though the team never disclosed the specific reason. "Our entire organization is mourning the McHale family's loss, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers." Kelvin Sampson, who is coaching the team in McHale's absence, told reporters last week the situation was improving. “It’s not out of the woods yet. There’s still a lot of concern, but it is improving," Sampson said. The Rockets are 6-7 in their second season with McHale, a Hall of Famer who spent his playing career with the Boston Celtics, at the helm.

'Dirty Jobs' canceled: What's next for host Mike Rowe?

There will be no more "Dirty Jobs" for host Mike Rowe. According to a blog written by Rowe, the Discovery Channel has canceled the pioneering reality show which took him into sewers and mud pits to perform weird, gross, and disgusting work-related tasks. While "Dirty Jobs," which premiered in 2003, was once a ratings success, its numbers have drifted downward over the years. Just last week, Discovery confirmed the cancellation (again) of the once-popular "American Chopper," about a father-son team of bike builders. Discovery did not return a request for comment. With the cancellation, Rowe, 50, can take a break from "exploding toilets, venomous snakes, misadventures in animal husbandry, and feces from every species," he writes in his blog post . Rowe learned the news several weeks ago, but seemed to be in some denial about its demise. "My first instinct was to immediately pass the news on to you, but frankly, it's taken me a few weeks to digest," he blogged, explaining how the show was a "very personal" endeavor for him. Some memorable "Dirty Jobs" of seasons past include: "Pig Farmer" (Aug. 9, 2005): Never say someone lives like a pig. Because they don't. "Alligator Farmer" (Jan. 24, 2006): Rowe tries to catch baby alligators. Uh, they win. "Dirty Jobs of the Big Apple" (April 14, 2008): Anyone who lives in New York City will fully appreciate all the things we take for granted -- like working elevators. "Sheep Castrator" (Oct. 21, 2008): A man bit off a lamb's testicles with his teeth. Enough said. In his blog, Rowe marks Thanksgiving day by expressing his gratitude for the crew and the fans. "Whether we were dangling from bridges, crawling through mines, swimming with sharks, castrating sheep, transplanting giant cacti, or slowly freezing to death on the Arctic Ocean, we usually made it out in one piece, and we always got what we needed," he says of the intrepid cameramen, producers, sound technicians, and others who braved hazardous conditions to film the show. As for the fans, Rowe acknowledges the show wouldn't have existed without them. "In truth, it was really you guys who programmed the show," he notes. "Long after I ran out of ideas for more jobs, it was your suggestions that kept us on the air." It's unclear if Rowe will continue with his other Discovery Channel ventures -- "How Booze Built America," which aired this fall, and narrating "Deadliest Catch," which is currently filming for an April 2013 premiere. Rowe has other irons in the fire -- like appearing in commercials for Ford, Lee Jeans, and Viva paper towels. Earlier this year, he guest starred alongside Tim Allen on the ABC sitcom "Last Man Standing." He also tends MikeRoweWorks.com, a site supporting trade workers. His advocacy for the industry led him to appear at an event with presidential nominee Mitt Romney -- though Rowe later said he didn't intend it as an endorsement. "Good things are in the works," Rowe writes in his blog. "Not as dirty perhaps, but exciting nevertheless."
