Tim Tebow Falling Fast In NFL Merchandise Sales

Tim Tebow is tumbling quickly from the top of the NFL's retail mountain. The Denver Broncos' iconic quarterback has fallen from No. 1 in NFL jersey sales all the way to 10th.

The Denver Post reports Tebow merchandise has drifted down the sales chart as No. 15 has drifted down the depth chart. The Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida had the top-selling jersey entering his rookie season, but now he's dealing with two kinds of sophomore slump.

Tebow had the 8th most popular jersey in terms of sales on the NFL's merchandise website from April through July. Throw in the month of August, as the Post did, and Tebow's No. 15 jersey was barely in the top 10.

Tebow's still very popular, but it doesn't help that he could end up as the third-string quarterback on a 4-12 Broncos team, behind Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn.

American football fans love buying jerseys from winners, and that explains the new leader. Packers Super Bowl hero Aaron Rodgers is now king of NFL jersey sales. His teammate, linebacker Clay Matthews, is second. Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is in third place.

In an era of offensive football, two of the top three selling jerseys are from defensive players. But both of those guys play in cities that love their D -- and enjoyed Super Bowl runs last winter.

Facebook Tops 1 Trillion Hits Per Month. The Internet KING

The Internet now belongs to Facebook, apparently.

According to figures released for web traffic in June 2011, Facebook hit one trillion page views that month, with 870 million unique visitors for the same period, giving the site a staggering 46.9% reach among all web surfers.

(MORE: Facebook Comments Make Websites Smarter, More Polite)

Strangely enough, those 870 million visitors are around 120 million greater than the Facebook's reported total number of registered users. The discrepancy may be down to non-Facebook members visiting the site from other social media links or through search engine traffic.

After Facebook, the next most popular site is YouTube, which has only one-tenth of the page views, but matches 90% of Facebook's unique visitors for the same time period, giving it a respectable 42.6% reach among web users. All Google needs to do is work out some way to lure YouTube users to its fledgling Google+ service (still invite-only, and in beta) and it may finally become the Facebook killer it clearly wants to be.

4 year Old Logan Howes Dies From Tractor Accident

Raceland, Lousiana – In one of the saddest stories I’ve read today, a 4-year-old boy was killed after falling off the back of a tractor and then ran over by a grass cutter the tractor was pulling behind it.

Last Thursday night, Logan Howes and his 7-year-old brother were riding on a tractor driven by their grandmother’s boyfriend. It was something they did all the time whenever they came over to visit, family say, and an activity that others in the community participate in with their own grandchildren.

But on this occasion, Barry Medeiros was making a turn and hit a bump at the same time. The older boy held on, but little Howes fell off and into the blades of a grass cutting attachment and died of multiple traumatic injuries. One neighbor described what happened immediately after they realized something had went wrong.

“We heard them yell so we walked over there and we saw Barry, the driver of the tractor crying over there and my dad went over, hugged him, comforted him and asked him what’s wrong Barry, he started just mumbling jibberish, mainly just about how he’s sorry.”

Authorities have ruled his death as an accident, an accident that has others thinking twice about letting children ride with them in such a fashion in the future.

“I hold him in my arm but it’s still not a safe way. It’s still not a safe method, wouldn’t suggest that to anybody. I’m thinking twice about it myself” Robert Foret said.

Letting kids ride on tractors is a fairly common practice within farming communities. My grandparents owned a dairy farm that we would visit quite regularly when I was a kid. I hated it until I realized that the calves would suck on anything you stuck in their mouths.

But one other fun thing I did was ride around on various tractors as my gramps pulled various equipment behind him that was designed specifically to chop up whatever it passed over. No one, not even my over-protective, hand-wringing mother, ever saw anything wrong with it.

Don King Turns 80 Today Aug. 20th

Legendary boxing promoter Don King turns 80 today (August 20), but neither his publicist Alan Hopper, nor anyone in his entire company seems to be able to get him to slow down long enough to celebrate the big day.

“Don has been like, ‘tell the media that I’m working.’ So, you know, his celebration is to work,” Hopper – King’s Vice President of media relations – explained, adding “We’ve gone out to dinner. We even got him a little cake last night. So it’s been an absolute celebration this entire week. But most of all, he’s just been working.”

King, known best for his wild hairstyle and flamboyant personality, entered the boxing world on August 28, 1972, when he convinced Muhammad Ali to take part in a charity fight for a local Cleveland hospital.

Even his debut in boxing was “King-sized,” as the fundraiser ended up becoming the second largest grossing boxing exhibition fight in the history of the sport.

From there, King went on to promote more than 500 world championship fights for some of the greatest boxers ever.

Don’s impressive roster of prize fighters, many of whom would finish their career with Hall of Fame credentials, included names like Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Wilfred Benítez, Roberto Durán, Salvador Sánchez, Wilfredo Gómez, and Alexis Argüello.

Inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997, King is also the only promoter to have been named to Sports Illustrated’s list of the “40 Most Influential Sports Figures of the Past 40 Years.”

In honor of Don King’s 80th birthday, CBCSports put together a detailed timeline of the iconic promoter’s life which can be seen here.

Coco Chanel Spied for Nazis: Book

French designer Coco Chanel spied for the Nazis during the German occupation of France in World War II, according to a new book on sale Tuesday.

"Sleeping with the Enemy: Coco Chanel's Secret War," by Hal Vaughan, expands on long-standing evidence that the iconic designer had a double life and was the lover of a spy, Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage.

"Sleeping with the Enemy pieces together how Coco Chanel became a German Intelligence operative; how and why she was enlisted in a number of spy missions; how she escaped arrest in France after the war," New York publishers Knopf said in a statement.

Vaughan's book reveals that not only was Chanel recruited to the Abwehr military intelligence organization, but that von Dincklage was himself a "Nazi master spy."

He "ran a spy ring in the Mediterranean and in Paris and reported directly to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, right hand of Hitler."

Chanel was also "fiercely" anti-Semitic, the book says, although at the time she would not have stood out among numerous other high-profile compatriots later seen as having collaborated during the 1940-44 occupation.

Chanel, an orphan who became a revolutionary fashion designer, moved to Switzerland after the war before returning to Paris to take up her career in fashion. She was never charged with any wrongdoing and died in 1971.

F-bombs dropping by the cluster in PG-13 movies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Those extra expletives you're hearing at the multiplex these days aren't just echoes. PG-13 movies, officially allowed one nonsexual F-word per script, are making increased use of that allotment — and more — as filmmakers work the rules in a world where R-rated comedies full of both male and female trash talk have become a summertime staple.

Recent PG-13 examples include F-bomb reactions to Ryan Gosling's abs in "Crazy Stupid Love," Bryan Cranston's boorish behavior in "Larry Crowne" and those rampaging robots in "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

"Filmmakers are certainly using it more often, taking advantage of it," says Joan Graves, head of the Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Rating Administration.

Using the F-word outside of the R-rated world certainly isn't a new phenomenon. In fact, prior to the adoption of the PG-13 rating in 1984, the F-word would periodically pop up in PG movies. Even after the creation of the PG-13 rating, movies like "Big" and "Beetlejuice" sneaked in the F-word and still secured a PG rating.
Those days are gone, but the expletive isn't — now uttered outside the province of the R-rating nearly as often as Hollywood does sequels.

"Making a PG-13 movie, it's always a pick-and-choose battle of where do you want to use one because, often with improvisation, a couple of F-words will creep into the movie," says "Crazy Stupid Love" screenwriter Dan Fogelman. "So you want to pick the best one, the most appropriate one."

Actually, as watchers of "The Social Network" and "The Tourist" can attest, PG-13 movies occasionally have more than one F-word. So how the (bleep) does that happen?
Officially, the MPAA's Classification and Rating Administration's guidelines state: "A motion picture's single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context."

But the MPAA's guidelines then add that if two-thirds of the rating board members believe that multiple F-words are used in a legitimate "context or manner" or are "inconspicuous," then the movie could still be rated PG-13.

Besides "The Social Network" and "The Tourist," add "The Adjustment Bureau," ''Iron Man 2" and "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" to recent films that have dropped more than one F-bomb and still secured PG-13 ratings.

Says the MPAA's Graves of the rating board's two-thirds override for language: "It's hard to explain. But if you've just seen the film and you think they've been innocuous . or they're an hour and a half apart . or they're in the background or not emphatic. Or sometimes they're in the same scene, just repeated twice." Each of those qualities can make a difference to the board, Graves notes.

"All the raters are parents, and they're charged with rating a film the way they think a majority of American parents would rate the film," Graves adds. "So that's the overriding focus."

Then, too, there's the way a film like "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" will have characters mouth the F-word or start to use a variation of it and trail off just before the offending expletive is fully stated. Technically, it's only used once. But in actuality, it's peppered throughout the movie.

Perhaps in an age where the faux children's board book "Go the (Bleep) To Sleep" tops The New York Times best-seller list and Cee Lo Green's song "(Bleep) You" becomes celebrated as a kiss-off anthem, there's just no avoiding the word.

"For most people, it's hardly noticeable any more," says Jesse Sheidlower, editor-at-large of the Oxford English Dictionary and author of "The F-Word," a detailed history of the expletive in question.

"That said, there's a disconnect between what happens in reality and what happens in representations of reality, like the movies," Sheidlower adds. "Filmmakers are always going to play games to get around the use of certain words."

Critics of the MPAA's policy toward language say Hollywood's game-playing can actually go both ways — that filmmakers intentionally insert profanity into movies in order to secure a PG-13 rating instead of what critic Nell Minow calls the more "babyish" PG designation.

Minow points to the 1998 Drew Barrymore movie "Ever After" as an example. The MPAA rated Barrymore's variation on the "Cinderella" tale PG-13 for "momentary strong language." When the film was released on DVD, the expletive was deleted and the film's rating changed to PG.

"It's a very calculated formula," says Minow, who reviews films as The Movie Mom for the Beliefnet website and radio stations nationwide. "Hollywood manipulates the ratings to get to that PG-13 sweet spot."

Which is why he believes the MPAA should simplify its code and not allow the F-word in PG-13 movies.

"Allowing it once or twice just doesn't make sense to me," Minow says. "The word is something you're OK with a child hearing or you're not. And, still, in 2011, I'd argue that it's outside the safety zone for children."

The MPAA's Graves says she's receptive to Minow's idea.

"If we have tremendous outcry from parents, we'll consider that," she says.

Oakland police draw guns without cause too often, federal report finds

OAKLAND -- A recent study found that Oakland police officers drew their guns and pointed them at individuals who did not present a threat 28 percent of the time.

The analysis came from Robert Warshaw, the federal monitor assigned to oversee the Oakland Police Department in the wake of the Riders federal corruption case, which settled in 2003. When officers draw their guns, they are required to file a use-of-force report explaining why. Warshaw's analysis looked at reports of 80 incidents in which 215 officers had drawn their guns between Jan. 1 and March this year.

"In each instance where there was a question as to whether an officer's action was appropriate, we gave any benefit of doubt to the involved officers," Warshaw wrote, "and we saw many examples of fine, proactive police work, and officers making good arrests. ... We are, however, troubled by the high number of instances where the officers' pointing of a firearm was not necessary or appropriate, given the documentation we reviewed."

Warshaw said he found in 56 percent of the cases, an officer appropriately pointed a gun at someone. In 16 percent of the cases, he said there wasn't enough information in the use-of-force reports to determine if the officers had acted appropriately.

In the rest of the cases, there was no indication that the officer or anyone else "faced imminent threat of harm" from the person at whom the gun was pointed.

Warshaw wrote that officers are escalating their use of force with no information that supports their belief a person is armed, using a tactic that could quickly prove deadly while bypassing less dangerous methods, such as drawing a stun gun or using a hands-on technique.

"In a few instances," Warshaw wrote, "it seemed that the only offense that a subject 'committed' was running from the police. While it is reasonable to assume that someone may be running because (he or she) is wanted or guilty of an offense, running is not, in and of itself, against the law; and it does not serve as justification for pointing a firearm."

Jim Chanin, a civil rights attorney who successfully sued the city in the Riders case, said the report highlights a major problem with policing in Oakland.

"We all know that it's dangerous for police out there, and we don't want to do anything to jeopardize officer safety," Chanin said. "On the other hand, if you are doing nothing and you have a gun pointed at you by a police officer, it leaves an indelible impression and can alienate someone from the police forever, particularly if they're a minority."

Warshaw broke down the bad-draw cases by race and found that 78 percent were black, 17 percent were Hispanic, and 5 percent were other ethnicities.

"That's unacceptable," Chanin said. "I realize sometimes that will happen, but it's so disproportionate to one community that it backfires. Then you want them to be a witness in a crime, or cooperate with police, and all they remember is having a gun pointed at them."

Oakland's population is about 27 percent black, according to the 2010 census. In 2010, 74 percent of shooting suspects and 84 percent of armed or strong-arm robbery suspects were identified or described by a witness as being black. Those proportions so far this year are 66 percent and 83 percent, respectively.

Of 656 Oakland police officers, 43 percent are white, 21 percent are black, 20 percent are Latino and 13 percent are Asian, with 3 percent declining to state.
The victims of violent crime are also disproportionately black. According to Assistant Chief Howard Jordan, "73 percent or so of our murder victims are African-American."

Harry Stern, a former Berkeley police officer and an attorney whose firm represents the police union in the Riders settlement, said, "OPD consciously places a great deal of their resources in the African-American community, and the reason for that is to protect the good folks that live there. Consequently, if you look at the statistics cited in the monitors' report, the issue of drawing and pointing weapons could appear skewed."

Jordan said the monitors sat down this week with top police brass to explain the methods they used in evaluating when an officer drew a gun. Commanders are now reviewing those cases, he said, and if they come to the same conclusions, they will address problematic officer behavior "through retraining, better supervision or policy revision, or all of the above."

Jordan said the current policy allows officers to draw their guns "when they feel their lives or the lives of others are in danger."

Dom Arotzarena, president of the police officers union, said he could not comment on anything related to the Riders settlement. He said, however, "We will work with our union attorneys and the city to figure out what this means for the police department."

Stern said he has some concerns about the report.

"Police officers draw their guns to protect themselves. I'm concerned some might read this report as suggesting they wait until attacked before being allowed to defend themselves," he said.

"One of the nuances that isn't discussed is that there's a significant lag time between when a threat is perceived and when an officer is able to draw his or her firearm; in other words, if their gun hasn't already been drawn when they're attacked, it's usually too late for them to return fire. And then we're all attending yet another police funeral."

Darius Miles gets caught with a loaded gun at a St. Louis airport

Since the weeks leading up to his selection in the 2000 NBA draft, and continuing through Wednesday, Darius Miles (notes) has never been known for making smart decisions. Whether it was begging off of pre-draft drills, cursing out his coaches, refusing to develop what the kids call "a go-to move," or getting caught in an airport with a loaded gun, Miles has been quite the disappointment.

Oh, you didn't hear? Yeah, Darius Miles tried to make it through airport security in St. Louis' Lambert Airport on Wednesday with a loaded gun on him.

From STL Today: "Miles, 29, was arrested about 3:30 p.m. after Transportation Security Administration personnel discovered the weapon during an X-ray screening at the airport, according to information from a TSA spokeswoman and a jail official. Miles was arrested by St. Louis airport police, then booked into the St. Louis County jail in Clayton.
It was unclear whether the gun was found in luggage or whether Miles was carrying it. The weapon was discovered at the Concourse A checkpoint. Authorities did not say what type of gun was seized."

Does it matter which sort of weapon was seized? It was loaded, people. Loaded. The guy had a loaded gun on him. To take into an airplane. Possibly a California Pizza Kitchen before that, but definitely to take into an airplane eventually, whether it was stuck on his hip or on his carry-on luggage.

In more depressing news, the report of the incident also points out that Darius Miles is 29 years old.

This is sad for a number of reasons, paramount of which is either the knowledge that a 29-year-old would attempt to take a loaded gun onto a plane (I used to fly in and out of that airport regularly back in college over a decade ago, and I was worried about the legality of my Walkman; which for you youngsters out there is a type of cassette player that is attached to a pair of headphones), or the sad fact that at age 29 Miles should be in the prime of his NBA career. Even if he never turned out to be a mini-Kevin Garnett(notes), Miles had the talent to make it until his late 30s in the NBA.

He shouldn't have turned into a joke of a blog post at age 29. That much is certain. What a shame.

Mexico town's police force quits after attack

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — An entire 20-man police force resigned in a northern Mexican town after a series of attacks that killed the police chief and five officers over the last three months, state officials said Thursday.

The officers' resignation Thursday left the 13,000 people of Ascension without local police services, Chihuahua state chief prosecutor Carlos Manuel Salas said. State and federal police have moved in to take over police work, he said.

The mass resignation appeared to be connected to a Tuesday attack by gunmen that killed three of the town's officers, Salas said.

But it wasn't the first deadly attack on the police department this year.

In mid-May, police chief Manuel Martinez, who had been in office just seven months, was gunned down with two other officers on a nearby highway. The three had been kidnapped a day before police found their bodies riddled with bullets in the back seat of a sedan.

The town's police force was relatively new.

Angry residents had led authorities to replace the entire force last September after the mob killings of two teenagers who had allegedly kidnapped a girl from a seafood restaurant. People claimed police officers were aiding drug gangs.

Martinez, with his new police force, had said he wanted to end the kidnappings and extortions that have terrorized the town where people grow green chili and cotton.

The new police in Ascension had installed a telescopic camera in the town's plaza that rotated, giving officers at the station the ability to zoom on a site as far as the outskirts of town.

In addition, townspeople helped police dig a broad ditch around the town to prevent criminals from escaping on back roads.
Ascension is southwest of Ciudad Juarez, the border city across from El Paso, Texas, that is one of Mexico's most violent cities. The state of Chihuahua has had the most homicides blamed on organized crime and drug trafficking since the government's anti-drug offensive began in December 2006.

Elsewhere, the Defense Department announced that a 19-day offensive in northern states against the Zetas drug cartel had resulted in the shooting deaths of 30 alleged criminals and a soldier.

The army said that among those killed was Jorge Luis de la Pena, the Zetas boss for Nuevo Laredo, the city across the Rio Grande from Laredo, Texas.

Troops also detained 196 people in different cities during operation "North Lynx."

The Zetas gang, known for its viciousness, has been fighting its former ally, the Gulf cartel, in Mexico's north since early 2010.
Near the northern industrial hub of Monterrey, police found the bodies of two men each hanging by an ankle from a pedestrian bridge. Officers said a witness reported that gunmen strung up the men alive and then shot them.

Such grisly displays at bridges have become common in and around Monterrey as well as in other Mexican cities torn by drug violence.

Steelers Coach Sells Mercedes To Team Cafeteria Worker For $20

A cook at the Pittsburgh Steelers team complex is driving around in a red Mercedes convertible thanks to an unexpected and generous deal from the franchise's former secondary coach.

On his final day in Pittsburgh before taking over as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, Ray Horton gave his 1999 Mercedes SL500 to cafeteria worker Maurice Matthews.

The cook had always kidded around with Horton, telling him he was coaching his position and asking when he'd be allowed to drive his sports car. Horton would jokingly reply, "you can't afford the gas in it."

But on his final day in Pittsburgh, Horton approached Matthews to say goodbye and asked if he could borrow whatever money he had in his pocket. When Matthews handed over a twenty, Horton said "sold for $20!" and handed him the keys to his car.

"Ray said, 'Hey, you always liked the car, you're a good dude, I know you'll take care of it," Matthews told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It's yours."

The next day he drove Horton to the airport and received all the paperwork to take ownership of the car. With 64,000 miles on it, Matthews ended up paying $20 for a vehicle that carries a Kelly Blue Book value of $17,735.

"It's just taking care of guys who took care of you," Horton told the Arizona Cardinals team blog.

The Cardinals got a good man. And cafeteria workers in Tempe just found their new favorite customer.

A 1939 Pontiac Deluxe Six 'Ghost Car' Was Designed With Plexiglass For The World's Fair

If part of the appeal of buying antique cars is owning something unique that no one else has, then the person who just purchase a 1939 Pontiac Deluxe Six "Ghost Car" is certainly happy today.

The transparent car, made out of Plexiglass for the 1939/1940 World's Fair in New York, sold this weekend for $308,000. The auctioneers, RM Auctions in Michigan, say it's the only one to exist, but there are some reports that there may be one more out there.

While a lot of things at the World's Fair showed where manufacturers imagined the future was headed, no one really thought we'd all be driving around in naked cars. The body was molded by Rohm & Hass, the inventor of Plexiglass, to show off the revolutionary new material.

This Pontiac is unrestored, so there's some visible damage that's been accumulated over the years, but this impressive artifact is the first full-size automobile rendered see-through and therefore deserves a place of prominence in someone's collection ... or living room. Either way, it will be a conversation piece.

Although unique, the car did not come anywhere close to breaking auction price records. Last year, a 1956 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic sold at an auction in California for over $30 million.

Kira Goddard Killed In Mysterious Car Accident

Thirteen-year-old Kira Goddard was sitting on her stoop at 2025 Pacific Street with some friends when she noticed an SUV driving erratically.

The driver, Sean Lewis, had a stab wound in the torso and was reversing wildly down the street, hitting three cars in his wake.

As the SUV bounded down the street toward them, Goddard yelled out for everyone to run, and got them out of the way before the car slammed into her house, killing both her and the driver.

“She told us to run for our lives, and she didn’t get a chance to run for hers,” her friend Alexia told the New York Times.

"I was running too fast. I didn't see the car hit her," Kira's sister, Tanisha Harewood, told the Wall Street Journal. "I turned around and I saw her shorts. She was already dead."

Friends and family are calling Goddard a hero for warning others of danger at the risk of her own life.

"She saved them all," Lyn Joseph, 36, told the Daily News. "She said, 'Run, run,' to all the other kids, because she saw the car coming. And when she went to move out of the way it was too late."

Kira died at the scene, and Lewis died later at Brookdale University Hospital.

Lewis had nine prior arrests, according to the Daily News, "including felony assault, four robberies and criminal possession of a controlled substance." Police are investigating the cause of Lewis' stab wound. He is survived by ten children.

Ame Deal, Arizona 10-Year-Old, Killed By Family For Taking Popsicle

The family of a 10-year-old found dead in a trunk outside an Arizona home initially claimed the child died while playing hide-and-seek. But investigators now believe Ame Deal suffocated after her family locked her in the box because she took a popsicle from the freezer without permission.

Phoenix police claim Deal's grandmother, aunt and two cousins regularly subjected the child to horrific treatment, ultimately culminating in her July 12 death.

"This child died at the hands of those who were supposed to love and care for her. ... This case has turned the stomachs of some of our most seasoned detectives," said Phoenix Police spokesman Sergeant Trent Crump in a statement posted on the city's website.

Deal's passing was classified as a "death unknown" until July 28, according to the police press release.

But after Deal's cousin Samantha Allen, 23, and her husband, John Allen, 23, admitted putting the child in the trunk and padlocking it, authorities charged the couple with first degree murder.

John Allen was allegedly angry with Deal because she had taken a popsicle from the freezer,

The victim's aunt, Cynthia Stoltzmann, 44, and grandmother, Judith Deal, 62, were charged with child abuse and kidnapping after reportedly admitting to locking the child in the box on previous occasions.

Witnesses told investigators the child was regularly punished by being locked in the trunk. They also saw the caregivers force Deal to eat dog feces as punishment, crush cans barefoot and exercise outdoors in "extreme measures," according to ABC15.

Deal's aunt allegedly confessed to putting hot sauce in the child's mouth, striking her with a paddle dubbed "Butt Buster" and ordering the child to sleep on the floor of a stall shower because she had a problem with wetting the bed, the news station reports.

Deal, who weighed just 59 pounds and was discovered in soiled clothing, died in a box that measured less than 3 feet long, 14 inches wide and one foot tall, according to The New York Daily News.

Twelve children who lived at the residence have been taken into custody by Child Protective Services, ABC15 reports.

The whereabouts of the child's mother are unknown and authorities are currently trying to locate Deal's biological father.
