Police warn about gangs recruiting prostitutes via Facebook

Facebook is a great way to connect with long-lost friends, and an even better way to connect with new ones. But not everyone who uses the world's most popular social network has good intentions: Police in Texas today are warning that girls are being lured into prostitution by gang members trolling their social media profiles. According to San Antonio Police Detective George Segura, gangs look for girls on Facebook who are showing off a bit too much skin, and are possibly seeking attention. Gang members then approach the girls on Facebook, befriend them, and convince them to meet up in person. No one is too young to be exploited — police say girls as young as 12 are being recruited. The sex trade is big business for gangs. According to a Bexar County probation officer, gang members "can easily make hundred of thousands of dollars per girl, per year." While this news is admittedly alarmist, it provides a strong reminder to revisit your child's Facebook privacy settings. You should also discuss ways for your son or daughter to be smart, safe digital citizens, so they'll be better equipped to avoid such dangers. And, of course, it's important to know when your child is too young to handle tech on their own. "Not every child needs access and such freedom to chat with strangers that could do them harm," says Segura.

Worst Ways to Clean Your TV

You've invested hundreds — maybe thousands — of dollars in your TV. So how should you clean the screen without risking ruining it? The Internet is full of ideas and ads touting the best products. So I sacrificed an LCD in order to put seven supposed solutions to the test. The Test Since most often, I find myself cleaning off kids' fingerprints, I first mixed up a concoction to simulate what they might have on their hands — cream cheese, sunscreen, and peanut butter. Next, I had the questionable pleasure of smearing this mess all over the screen (which I did while the kids were out of the house — gotta be careful what I role-model). I unplugged the TV for safety, then tested each product in turn: 1. Windex: I was nervous about using anything with ammonia, but it didn't seem to do any damage. On the other hand, it left a streaky residue. Just like when you clean your windows, the product isn't perfect. 2. Alcohol and Water: I like the idea of alcohol, because it should evaporate without leaving a mark. And in fact, the results were pretty good — at least with a soft rag. So next, I took the opportunity to test the same cleaner with a different cloth… 3. Alcohol and Water and Paper Towel: Disaster! Not only did the paper towel shed fibers on the screen, it streaked the screen so badly, I thought I might have permanently scratched it. Sure, some TV glass is more durable than others, but a scratched screen is something you definitely don't want to risk. 4. Furniture Polish: This is not something I would have ever tried had I not read it on line… And sure enough — the result was major streaks along with a cloudy residue. 5. Water and Vinegar: At first, this didn't seem to cut the grease, but once I buffed it out, this combo really worked. For a low-budget solution a product you might already have on hand, this does an admirable job. 6. Antistatic Cleaning Wipes: These come pre-moistened and are supposedly formulated specifically for cleaning TVs and electronics screens. Yeah, well, maybe they're designed just to deal with the dust that is naturally attracted to electronic screens, and their makers didn't foresee cream cheese. That could excuse the major streaks that remained after trying these wipes, but it doesn't excuse the hairy particles the cloth itself left behind. 7. Screen Guard and Microfiber: Of all the solutions I tried, Screen Guard was the most expensive; at $20, it's more than twice as pricey as the antistatic wipes — which may make many shy away. But the result? Perfection. No residue, no streaks, no fibers. In fact, after the test, I used this method to clean the entire screen of the mess left by all the other contenders. Bottom line: if you've spent hundreds or thousands on a TV, $20 on the right cleaner seems like a smart investment.

The two shooters are still at-large.

City may sue developer who spent $20,000 to remove 40 tons of trash from vacant lot

But the Daily News reports that Feibush went ahead with his plans anyway, reportedly spending more than $20,000 of his own money not only to remove the trash but also to level the soil; add cherry trees, fencing and park benches; and repave the sidewalk. "This was a lot of garbage," local resident Elaine McGrath told the paper. "Now it's gorgeous. I'm excited."

Russia has vast amount of Diamonds

If you had more diamonds than the rest of the world combined hiding under an asteroid crater, would you tell anyone? Russia was happy to keep that knowledge a secret until now, finally revealing plans to begin tapping into a reserve containing trillions of carats worth of diamonds. It's a treasure trove of unprecedented scope, secrecy, and value. First reported by the Christian Science Monitor, the crater, which rests in the upper reaches of Siberia, was left by an asteroid that crashed into Earth 35 million years ago, creating an impact zone that's 62 miles in diameter. In the intervening eons, it's believed to have spawned enough diamonds to power the global market for the next 3,000 years. By context, the next biggest Russian reserve at the Yakutia mines is believed to have one billion carats—several orders of magnitude less than this current haul. What makes these diamonds especially valuable to prospective buyers is the fact that they're impact diamonds, or diamonds formed as a result of an asteroid or meteor crashing into the carbon-based compound graphite. According to IDEX, these are diamonds that can never be used as jewels, but rather are extremely valuable for their industrial applications. For starters, Russian officials claim these newly revealed diamonds, known as impactite, are twice as hard as normal diamonds, while others value these diamonds for their grain size and abrasive cuts. So why reveal the secret now, after all these years? When the discovery was first made decades ago, Russian already had other diamond mines which were yielding abundant amounts of the coveted mineral. And because the diamond industry was heavily regulated back then, there was little financial motivation to announce a discovery that has the power to heavily influence the market for these things. But now, with the diamond industry starting to show signs of life after bottoming out in 2009, and the increased use of diamonds in the technological world, Russia seems to think its a good time to start mining these valuable little things (or at least start thinking about mining them). But the true effect will take time to be felt, according to a quote given to the Russian publication ITAR-TASS by an expert in the field: Deputy Director of the Yakutnipromalmaz Institute Gennady Nikitin warns: "The Popigai diamonds can overturn everything, and is not clear what will happen to prices in the market." So how will this impact us normal people? Probably not much at all. Since these jewels will never be converted to gems, the price of that wedding ring you plan to give or receive will never be affected by this Russian stockpile. But should there be a global shortage in the future, Russia will be in a unique position of controlling the entire industrial diamond industry. Given the increased use of lasers in technological innovations, and the quest to attain nuclear fusion (both of which rely on industrial diamonds), the demand for this rock won't be diminishing anytime soon.

Four US Troops Killed in Afghan Inside Attack; 8 Coalition Troops Killed in 3 Days

Four American service members were killed by an Afghan policeman early today, the third attack on coalition forces in three days, bringing the death toll in the recent violence to eight. The attacks -- two "green on blue" incidents and an assault on a coalition base by 15 Taliban fighters -- come as tensions flared across the Muslim world over an anti-Islam film that was produced in the United States. In the latest attack, an Afghan police officer turned his gun on NATO troops at a remote checkpoint in southern Afghanistan before dawn. Four U.S. soldiers were killed before the shooter escaped, bringing the total of coalition troops killed to six in just two days. International Security Assistance Force officials say the attacker is still at large, and noted it's unclear if there were multiple assailants. It is still unclear exactly what transpired at the checkpoint, according to Afghan officials, who say American forces responded to an attack on the checkpoint to help the Afghan police. "The checkpoint was attacked last night. Then the police started fighting with the Americans," Ghulam Gilani, deputy police chief of Zabul province, said. "Whether they attacked the Americans willingly, we don't know." A Taliban spokesman said the police involved were not affiliated with the Taliban insurgency. Also today, NATO confirmed that an airstrike that killed as many as 45 insurgents also killed five to eight Afghan civilian casualties -- including women and children. "ISAF takes full responsibility for this tragedy," the coalition said in a statement released after the strike. The civilian casualties can only increase tensions in the country, and villagers who drove the bodies of the dead to the privincial capital, Mehterlam chanted "Death to America," Laghman provincial government spokesman Sarhadi Zewak said. "Protecting Afghan lives is the cornerstone of our mission and it saddens us when we learn that our action might have unintentionally harmed civilians," said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for international military in Afghanistan. So far this year, 51 coalition troops have been killed by Afghan service members. At least 12 such attacks happened in August alone, leaving 15 dead. News of the shooting comes after one of the biggest attacks ever on an ISAF base. On Friday, 15 Taliban attackers, dressed in U.S. Army uniforms, attacked Camp Bastion in Afghan's Helmand province. According to the ISAF, the insurgents used automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and explosive suicide vests in the late night attack. Two U.S. Marines were killed, and nine others were wounded, including one civilian contractor. During the attack, which officials say appeared to be well planned and rehearsed, the insurgents destroyed six Harrier fighter jets, worth about $20 million each, and damaged two others. They also damaged six hangars and destroyed three refueling stations. The last attack in which so many U.S. aircraft were destroyed at one time is believed to have been more than 40 years ago, during the Vietnam War. All but one of the insurgents were killed by return gunfire, and a 15th was captured. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was revenge for the controversial video made in the United States that insults the Prophet Muhammad. Prince Harry, a member of the U.K. military in Afghanistan is based at Camp Bastion. When he was first stationed there, the Taliban said they were out to kill him, although NATO officials say he was several miles away, and was never in danger during this attack. On Saturday, two British troops were killed in an attack in Helmand province carried out by a gunman in the uniform of a government-backed militia. Recent months have seen a string of attacks by Afghan forces against their international counterparts, who are working towards handing over security responsibilities to the Afghans as international troops draw down. This weekend's attacks come amid turmoil throughout the Middle East, where anti-American protests have flared up, ostensibly in response to the online video mocking the Prophet Muhammad. An attack on the American embassy in Libya last week led to four deaths, including the American ambassador to Libya. The protests have prompted the removal of U.S. personnel from their posts in Sudan and Tunisia. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice told Jake Tapper on "This Week" the attack was not premeditated, contradicting top Libyan officials who say the attack was planned in advance. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the turmoil raging across the Muslim world will likely continue for days, but the violence appears to be leveling off. He said the Pentagon has "deployed our forces to a number of areas in the region to be prepared to respond to any requests that we receive to be able to protect our personnel and our American property." ABC News' Muhammad Lila and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Prison Snitches Help Guard Get Free

A South Carolina prison guard was released following a tense five-hour standoff, after inmates using contraband cell phones tipped off authorities that the injured officer was being held hostage in a broom closet. About 120 inmates in one dormitory of the Lee Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in Bishopville, S.C., "overtook an officer" using homemade shanks and other weapons around 5 p.m. EDT, said department of corrections spokesman Clark Newsom. The guard suffered lacerations on his face and was held hostage for five hours in a closet guarded by inmates, many of them convicted rapists and murderers. Other inmates inside the prison alerted authorities to the guard's whereabouts by making phone calls from contraband mobile phones, which had previously been smuggled into the prison by throwing them over the perimeter fence, Newsom said. The state department of corrections directed hostage negotiators and SWAT teams to the prison, where a standoff ensued for nearly five hours. At 9:34 p.m. a special operations team stormed the prison and found the guard, freeing him within 15 minutes and suppressing the riot. The guard, who officials have not identified, had "lacerations from homemade shanks but was in pretty good condition and did not seem to be injured seriously," said Newsom. Nevertheless, he was "taken to a local hospital by helicopter as a precaution." The spokesman said the attack on the guard was a crime of "opportunity" and did not appear to have been planned. Authorities did a search of the prison and confiscated contraband including cell phones. The prison remains on lockdown. Author: Russell Goldman

40 Indicted in Drug Ring Run From Indiana Prisons

Two inmates housed at different Indiana prisons used cellphones smuggled in by guards to run a drug ring that distributed methamphetamine and heroin, according to a federal indictment that charges 40 people in connection with the scheme. Prosecutors, in the indictment unsealed Wednesday, allege that the purported ringleader, Oscar Perez, and an inmate at another prison, Justin Addler, even used the smuggled phones to hold conference calls with a third man to discuss “pooling their financial resources” to get a discount on heroin. At least 17 people appeared in court Wednesday in Indianapolis after about 300 FBI agents fanned out across the state and made arrests. A judge ordered them to remain in custody. Only one prison guard was among those charged, though the indictment alleges several were involved. Prosecutors declined to say if more charges were expected. Few details about the defendants were included in the court documents, although prison records show Perez is serving time for murder and attempted murder at Westville Correctional Facility in northern Indiana, while Addler is housed at central Indiana’s Pendleton Correctional Facility on convictions including drug dealing. The indictment details a series of alleged phone calls the two men placed to people outside the prisons, including calls to arrange the purchase of “large amounts” of heroin from a source in Chicago. They also instructed people how and where the drugs should be sold, prosecutors allege. “Once acquired, the heroin was brought from Illinois to Indiana by the use of couriers where it was, in turn, distributed on the streets to various places” in central and southern Indiana, the indictment states. Meth was acquired from sources in California, while other drugs, including PCP, were also involved, according to the indictment. In at least one call in May 2012, Addler stayed on the phone with a woman “throughout the duration” of a drug deal as she sold about 20 grams of heroin at a truck stop in Crawfordsville, Ind., for $2,500, according to the indictment. Tim Horty, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett, declined to discuss the indictment, including whether additional inmates or prison guards might be charged. Doug Garrison, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Correction, also declined to comment. The lone corrections officer facing charges, Jon Dobbins, worked at another prison, the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in southwestern Indiana. The indictment alleges he was found “in possession” of nearly 21 grams of a substance containing meth, and had a cellphone that he intended to “clandestinely bring” into the prison and leave with an inmate. Dobbins didn’t have a listed phone number in Indiana, according to phone records. Horty confirmed that Dobbins was the only correctional officer named in the indictment, but he declined further comment. The Indiana Department of Correction issued a statement saying it has been cooperating with the FBI since the investigation began and that that department uncovered the evidence that led to Dobbins. “The actions of the small number of any IDOC correctional employees who may have facilitated these illegal activities brings dishonor to them and tarnishes the good name and professionalism of the vast majority of IDOC employees,” the department’s statement said.
