Orange Edition:

New Kansas City Chief Allen Bailey Is The Product Of A Remarkable American Community

Allen Bailey's secret to reaching the colossal physical proportions necessary to become an NFL defensive end is a protein source unfamiliar to most 21st-century Americans, let alone big-time football players. The University of Miami product, picked in the third round of the draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, sits down to home-cooked meals of slow-roasted raccoon, parboiled possum and hickory-smoked armadillo.

Wild boar, now that's a real treat. Bailey tips the scales at 285 pounds, having stuffed his gut during his formative years with just about anything on four feet his family could catch on the tiny island off the coast of Georgia where he was raised. Forty-seven people live in Hog Hammock on Sapelo Island, more than half of whom are related to Bailey.

All are part of the tight-knit Gullah/Geechee community, descendants of slaves admired for preserving their African cultural heritage two centuries after being brought to the United States. Bailey's ancestors were among 400 slaves from West Africa taken to Sapelo Island by a British plantation owner. Some stayed after the Civil War, and they subsisted on a protein-rich diet of deer, boar, marsupials and shellfish.

And still do. Even though game was a description of what's for dinner before it became a vehicle to a lucrative career, Bailey grew up big, strong and smart. On May 13, he will become the first from his family to graduate from college.

He asked his mother, Mary, what he could give her that would put a big smile on her face after he signed his first NFL contract. Her reply: "Your diploma."

Mary Bailey has worked for years as a cook at the Reynolds Mansion, a tourist and retreat destination on Sapelo Island. Guests can reach the island only by boat, and Bailey's father worked for decades as the first mate on a ferry called the Katie Underwood. After checking into the 13-bedroom, 11-bathroom mansion, guests are fed a sumptuous dinner prepared by Mary of seafood, turkey, red beans and rice, and locally grown corn and okra.

The good stuff she saves for her family back in the double-wide three-bedroom trailer in Hog Hammock.

"Raccoon has a good flavor, it tastes like nothing else," Bailey says. "Everything on the table is great. It's home cooking."

Bailey missed all of it while away at college. He was able to visit only a few times each school year, but he made up for it during the summers. He's the second youngest of seven children, and the family watched the draft from a friend's house in Georgia because there is no cell phone reception on the island. Bailey plans to spend time in Hog Hammock over the next few days, to do some hunting with his dad, eat his mom's meals and enjoy the peace and quiet.

"Where I'm from is country, the slow-down life," he says. "I'm outdoors all the time, it's what I call real nature. Not even one stop sign. There's no law."

Bailey didn't play football until the seventh grade. He and his brothers and cousins played a touch keep-away game they called "yard ball." A rusted basketball hoop helped him develop stamina, and he grew and grew, taking after a grandfather everyone on the island simply called, "Big One."

Sports became a priority when Bailey attended high school in Darien, Ga., a 20-minute ferry ride away. He chose Miami over Florida and Alabama, and developed into a chiseled NFL prospect. He has the best vertical jump ever by a Miami defensive lineman, and scouts loved his combination of strength and quickness as well as his relentless motor.

After getting the call from the Chiefs Friday night, Bailey tried to learn a little bit about Kansas City. It's a long way from the Atlantic Ocean and Sapelo Island, but a staple of his childhood diet is also considered a delicacy in Missouri.

It’s raccoon, a recipe for which was included in the first edition of "The Joy of Cooking."

Listen to Jeff Beringer, a biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation: "Raccoon meat is some of the healthiest meat you can eat. It's the ultimate organic food."

Bailey wouldn't disagree. He's a 6-foot-3, tightly muscled billboard for the virtues of lean protein, hunted by his kin, cooked by his mom.

"My parents won't ever want to move," he said. "They might add on to the house they have now. But leave Hog Hammock? I don’t think so. That’s home."

Cam Newton goes 1st in less-than-festive NFL draft

Between the boos raining down on Commissioner Roger Goodell and the uncertainty created by a bitter labor battle, the NFL draft opened Thursday night lacking much of its usually festive atmosphere.

What it wasn’t missing was intrigue and surprises—at least after the Carolina Panthers made Cam Newton(notes) the first pick.

The Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner as expected went to the worst team in the league—and vowed to fix that immediately. Newton led Auburn to an undefeated season and its first national championship since 1957.

“I’m ready to change this whole organization around, to go from worst to first,” he said. “Just being a Panther is the most special part about this.”

Before Newton, decked out in a Carolina cap and gray three-piece suit, took that familiar walk across the stage to shake the commissioner’s hand—a draft-day staple—Goodell had been hearing the displeasure of fans worried that labor strife might interfere with the upcoming season.

Goodell was booed as he prepared to conduct a moment of silence for victims of the devastating storms that ripped through the South. He responded to their chants of “We want football!” by saying, “I hear you. So do I.”

The boos continued every time he stepped on stage for the early part of the first round, though they died down as the night went along. By the end, there was hardly a smattering of jeers.

Goodell smiled his way through it all, unfazed. Not even having to welcome a player suing the league could knock the commissioner off his game.

With the second pick, Denver took Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller(notes), a plaintiff in the antitrust lawsuit filed by the players to block the lockout imposed by the owners.

“I’ve never had anything against Roger Goodell,” Miller said. “I just want to make sure football continues to get played. When I walked across the stage, I was meeting the commissioner. That was it.”

Thanks to a judge’s ruling in the lawsuit Miller is involved in, the league’s first work stoppage since 1987 temporarily ends Friday. The 32 teams will resume business in compliance with U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson’s order to lift the lockout.

Then again, the lockout could be back in place if the NFL wins an appeal. If that happens, Newton, Miller and the rest of Thursday night’s draft picks would be thrown back into labor limbo.

For now, they will be allowed to report to their teams, meet coaches and get playbooks. Contract negotiations are uncertain until the league announces its rules for the 2011 season—rules that might be in force for only a short time if an appeal is granted.

The draft was never in danger because it was protected under the old collective bargaining agreement that expired in March.

Moments before the annual spring ritual got under way, Goodell requested a moment of silence for victims of Wednesday’s storms, which left at least 280 people dead in six states and hundreds more injured. He was surrounded by players from Auburn and Alabama and their coaches.

Of those stars, none shined brighter than Newton, who has shown he can handle the heat of a spotlight. He turned in a sensational 2010 season while the NCAA investigated his recruitment. Newton’s father, Cecil, has admitted soliciting money from Mississippi State during the recruiting process, but said neither the player nor Auburn knew about the pay-for-play attempt.

With the third pick, Buffalo selected Alabama nose tackle Marcell Dareus(notes), who gave Goodell a big hug. Of course, Dareus weighs 308 pounds, at least 100 more than Goodell.

“I wanted to give him a hug because I finally made it to the big dance,” Dareus said.

Cincinnati, perhaps calling the bluff of quarterback Carson Palmer(notes), who is demanding a trade, instead took the top receiver in this crop, A.J. Green(notes) of Georgia.

Arizona, also in need of a quarterback, selected the top cornerback available, Patrick Peterson(notes) of LSU.

The labor unrest led to speculation not many trades would be made Thursday. But just six picks in, Atlanta cut a massive deal with Cleveland. The Falcons gave up five picks over the next two seasons, including this and next year’s first-rounders, and moved up from No. 27 to grab Alabama receiver Julio Jones(notes)— the fifth Southeastern Conference player in the first six.

“We knew it was going to be an aggressive move and cost us,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “As an organization we felt very strongly about the move for a player who truly adds the explosive, urgent athleticism we’re looking for …”

San Francisco chose defensive end Aldon Smith(notes) of Missouri to bolster a weak pass rush, then the second quarterback was selected: Washington’s Jake Locker(notes), who many thought had played himself out of the first round with an inconsistent senior season, to Tennessee.

That began a small run on passers. After Dallas went for offensive tackle Tyron Smith(notes) of Southern California with the ninth pick, Jacksonville saw a chance to get its future quarterback. The Jaguars moved up six slots for Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert(notes), dealing their first-round pick and a second-rounder to Washington.

“You really don’t have any idea where you will go, especially with the lockout,” Gabbert said. “But the trades are happening now.”

Houston bolstered its weak defense with Wisconsin end J.J. Watt(notes) at No. 11 before yet another QB was chosen: Florida State’s Christian Ponder(notes) went to Minnesota in what was probably the most surprising pick of the first round.

Few prognosticators had the often-injured quarterback going in the first half of the first round.

Auburn DT Nick Fairley(notes), once projected as a top-three selection, was chosen 13th by the Lions. Detroit took defensive tackle in Ndamukong Suh(notes) in the first round last year and he became the defensive rookie of the year.

St. Louis, undeterred by Robert Quinn’s(notes) lost season—the linebacker-end was suspended from North Carolina for his role in an agents scandal—took him at No. 14.

Mike Pouncey(notes), whose twin brother, Maurkice, was a sensational rookie center for Pittsburgh last year, was chosen by Miami to play the same position.

After moving down to No. 16, Washington took Purdue linebacker Ryan Kerrigan(notes). Cleveland traded again, from No. 27 to 21st for Baylor DT Phil Taylor, with Kansas City sliding to 27th.

New England addressed concerns about protecting Tom Brady(notes) by taking Colorado tackle Nate Solder, and archrival Indianapolis safeguarded Peyton Manning(notes) by selecting Boston College tackle Anthony Castonzo.

Former firefighter and hockey player Danny Watkins went to Philadelphia. The Canadian guard from Baylor apologized to Giants fans in the audience who booed him for going to the rival Eagles. Watkins was told to get used to such treatment in New York.

Baltimore passed after using all 10 minutes at No. 26 and Kansas City, in the next slot acquired through Atlanta and Cleveland, swooped in. The Chiefs got Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin while the Ravens still pondered their pick. They went with Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith at No. 27.

Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, went 28th overall to New Orleans, which traded with New England to get the spot. The Saints surrendered a 2012 first-rounder for the Alabama running back, giving them two Heisman winners in their backfield—sort of. Reggie Bush(notes) won the award in 2005, but he relinquished it after an NCAA probe found he accepted improper gifts while playing at Southern California.

Super Bowl champion Green Bay concluded the 3 1/2 -hour first round by taking Mississippi State tackle Derek Sherrod.

Piaget - Ultra Thin Wristwatch

The 140-year-old manufacture of some of the world’s finest mechanical movements. The brand, which in its earliest stages of life built only movements for some of the finest watch brands, began creating their own timepieces in the 1940s. In the 1950s, Piaget is credited with pioneering with the ultra-thin wristwatch with the introduction of caliber 9P, a movement that was only 2mm thick.

Following the 9P was the caliber 12P, which added automatic winding to the existing movement, but only added .3mm in thickness. In the 1970s, Piaget and its flamboyant CEO Yves Piaget inspired the international jet-set crowd of Monte Carlo and Palm Beach to wear colorful stones like lapis-lazuli, turquoise, onyx and tiger’s eye on both their watches and their jewelry, and counted the likes of Jackie Kennedy and Andy Warhol as both friends and clients.

This January at Geneva’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), Piaget introduced the next great innovation in ultra-thin wrist wear, the Emperador Coussin Tourbillon Automatic Ultra-Thin, the world’s thinnest self-winding tourbillon. At only 10.4mm thick, the new tourbillon is thinner than most watches that display just the time. Here, Piaget CEO Philippe Leopold-Metzger explains what being the world’s thinnest means, and where the legendary brand is headed next.

Life + Times: What does the Emperador Coussin Tourbillon Automatic Ultra-Thin mean to Piaget as it looks to the future? Is this product the beginning of something new, or the culmination of something the brand has been working towards?
Philippe LĂ©opold-Metzger: It means a lot. It is a product that epitomizes our philosophy that is technique is at the service of design. The watch is elegant and very slim. In fact at 10.4 mm it is the thinnest automatic tourbillon watch in the world. We have put one of the most difficult complications in a very thin case – quite an achievement. And, we have overturned the traditional codes of watchmaking by constructing the movement in such a way that the micro-rotor is situated on the dial side, making the watch even more fascinating.

L+T: Do you view the buyer of the Coussin Tourbillon as different than the clients of the traditional Piaget Ultra Thins?
PLM: They share the same values, but this watch appeals more to collectors than the traditional Altiplano, which is a simple watch that, while truly beautiful, can be worn daily.

L+T: How long did it take to develop the movement inside the Coussin Tourbillon Automatic?
PLM: The movement from design to production took three years, which really is very impressive considering how complicated the piece is.

L+T: Do you see a shift in buying patterns in the world of haute horology? If yes, what are they?
PLM: There is a shift to more wearable products. More than ever, tourbillons are the most popular complications, simply because they are the nicest. I feel consumers are also shying away from the ultra-complicated timepieces.

L+T: Who is your ideal Piaget client? Has that changed in the last five years?
PLM: Our ideal client is one with taste that is looking for a contemporary, yet classical watch. This is the ultimate for him or her, the perfect alchemy between modernity and tradition. Today there is a welcome return towards elegance.

L+T: This year at SIHH, many brands introduced what were large diameters, but very thin timepieces. Is this a product of brands like Piaget leading the consumer or is this reactionary and purely a response to the demands put out by the clients?
PLM: I want to believe that Piaget has been reacting more quickly to where the market was heading, and that the success of Altiplano and Piaget ultra-slim watches have stimulated the rest of the industry. A large diameter and a thin profile is a winning combination in watches.

L+T: Is there a breaking point with ultra-thin designs? How thin do you strive to make a watch, and now that Piaget holds the titles of thinnest manually wound watch, thinnest auto, thinnest manual tourbillon and thinnest automatic tourbillon. What else is left to accomplish?
PLM: Good question. We are always careful not to be thinner than we should, to be sure to be reliable and have a greater power reserve. In the future we will continue to apply our belief that thin movements allow for elegant watches. (Piaget)

Dutch club VVV-Venlo sign 1-year-old Child

YouTube videos have led to a number of footballers getting signed by clubs around the world, but this might be the first time it's worked for an 18-month-old. It's very much a publicity stunt, but the popular YouTube clip of young Baerke van der Meij kicking balls into his toy chest caught the attention of relegation-threatened Dutch top flight club VVV-Venlo and prompted the club to sign him to a 10-year professional contract. Though, it is made clear that the contract is a "symbolic" one.

From the Telegraph:

The toddler joined VVV's star midfielder Ken Leemans during a training session in De Koel Stadium on Tuesday before being offered the "symbolic" contract.
"The toddler's favourite position has not yet been determined. However, we can speak of a right-footed player with a very good kicking technique, perseverance and, importantly: football genes via his grandfather," said a VVV Venlo press release.
Baerke's grandfather used to play for the club and his family still lives in the city of Venlo.
As silly as this whole thing is, VVV-Venlo really did a great job of selling it, even going so far as to have the little boy attend a press conference and sign a contract. Well, scribble on one, anyway. Here are some pictures from the event...

Between the fauxhawk, the runny nose, and the satisfied look on his face, I'd say little Baerke has a bright future ahead of him.
Of course, Arsenal have long been the subject of jokes about signing young players, so we'll have to wait and see how they react to seeing an 18-month-old signed by another club. Someone is probably trying to figure out how to have a fetus sign a contract right now.

Good News Is Now Bad News

Early this morning I was searching for some positive news on CNN.COM and I came across an article on the California Condor. A beautiful majestic bird that is making an amazing comeback. 25 years ago this much needed species was completely extinct in the wild. It's numbers dwindled down to only 27 left in captivity. It was inspiring for me to read that there are now a total of 394 Condors, with 181 in the wild. That has not been seen since the 1930's. Great news right?

There are several reasons for the importance of the worlds largest flying bird to thrive on this planet. Their place on the living organisms food chain is completely snapped in half without the Condor. They are the above sea level scavengers that thousands of other species rely on. They feed off dead carcasses of deer, cattle, sheep, small animals, rabbits, and fish to name a few. They are basically Mother Natures clean up crew. The California Condor has evolved over time developing stomach and digestive enzymes that are impervious to diseases from eating decaying flesh, protecting all other animals and plants from obtaining killer ailments. About 50 other endangered animals and plants are able to gain populous ground from the Condors natural heroics. Still great news right?

Well there's a catch. The 181 Condors now in the wild from Arizona, Oregon, California, and Mexico are now eating marine carcasses, which is good, but the meat now contains a pesticide chemical called DDT. DDT is banned in the United States but the chemical enters the environment from use in other countries. This toxin causes the Condors eggs to thin. So when the mother sits on them to kept her babies warm, the eggs crush! However, wildlife conservationist are smart. With around the clock monitoring they steal the weak eggs from the nests in the wild and replace them with strong healthy eggs from captive Condors and place the weak ones in artificial incubators. Great move and a heart warming story.

Three things that concern me with this story.

1. The marine life whether dead, alive, or decaying, carry this toxin! Without question it must be in all seafood us humans eat as well. What are the consequences for us?

2. Fukashima; the dumping of 12,000 tons of radioactive water dumped into the ocean! Instantly affecting small protazoa, and plankton. Any person with a 6 grade education could understand that small animals eat bigger animals and so fourth.

3. The swapping of eggs is only a temporary solution. I'm sure conservationist know this, but the other countries need to stop using this toxin.

What to do, where to begin, how to help? I have no clue. I am just sad that the news highlights rehabilitation of Lindsey Lohan more that rehabilitating Mother Earth. We are destroying the future of LIFE at an unprecedented pace. Just do me a favor and analyze the info your fed and never neglect the big picture. What appears to be good news can just be smoke for the bad news dodged by the Main Stream Media.

Inspiring: Before I Die Wall In New Orleans

Death can inspire life. Especially in New Orleans, on the corner of Marigny and Burgundy, where the “Before I Die” project has used the specter of urban decay and death to create art and inspire. Using a boarded up house as a canvas, artist Candy Chang transformed a haunting reminder of blight and divestment into a powerful affirmation of human life and imagination.

The project is entitled “Before I Die”, and encourages community members to fill in the blank, “Before I die, I want to _______.” The responses range from, “save a life,” to “learn to play mandolin,” but all are personal dreams, that together comprise a document of the community’s aspirations. “Once the wall is filled, we wash the board with water and start with a clean slate again,” says Chang. Made with only primer, chalkboard paint, stencils, spray paint, and chalk, the project proves that art doesn’t need to be elaborate; it just needs to speak to people.

Unfortunately, the house on which the “Before I Die” installation was mounted was recently sold, so the living art project is looking for a new home. Chang wants to find another location in her native New Orleans, but has been amazed that so many people across the country have requested it in their cities too.

While it’s Chang’s framework that created the project, it’s been people’s participation that has made it successful, and with requests pouring in from other cities, the wall appears endless.

Chris Bosh Got Married And Won't Admit It

The Miami Heat have been the object of their fair share of jokes this season, most of which have targeted the Big Three for their love of fame ahead of basketball accomplishments like wins and championships. Within that framework, no player has received more guff than forward Chris Bosh(notes), both because he's extremely gangly and because he seems to have no sense of what constitutes positive publicity. Note to Chris: You should probably not do photoshoots for Maxim unless you are a semi-famous woman who looks good in very little clothing.

Given Bosh's proclivity for publicity, it's fairly shocking when he keeps certain news private, especially when it's a matter of private record. According to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel (via PBT), Bosh and his longtime girlfriend Adrienne Nicole Williams were married recently in Miami-Dade County. Their marriage certificate is on file and everything. It is as official as marriages get.

The only problem is that Bosh won't own up to it. When Winderman asked him, he played dumb:
"Not yet, man, not yet," Bosh said. "I was made aware of stuff leaking out or supposed information leaking out. Yes, I am scheduled to be married, but we're not there yet."

Bosh is entitled to his privacy, and it honestly doesn't matter much whether or not he's married. That's a personal decision. Basketball writers are supposed to tell Bosh what he's doing wrong on the court, not at home. Shockingly, there are limits to our expertise.

What interests me here is why a player as media-friendly as Bosh has suddenly decided to keep quiet about his marriage. This is by every possible metric a great moment in his life worthy of celebration. Why would he keep it secret? Maybe it's as simple as Bosh and Williams wanting to have a lavish ceremony this offseason while making things official in the eyes of the state beforehand. Or perhaps he wants to stay focused on the playoffs, although Bosh has never been one to shy from off-court publicity when basketball should theoretically be center stage.

For whatever reason, Bosh has finally drawn a line dictating that some aspects of his life have to be kept private. He's certainly entitled to that decision, even if it seems curious in this particular situation. Whether or not this newfound desire for privacy stretches to other areas of his media profile remains to be seen. Based on some questionable choices he's made in the past, it might not be the worst idea.

Lilo Surprises Jay Leno, Gets A Standing O

Lindsay Lohan gave Jay Leno’s studio audience quite a shock last night when she stopped by The Tonight Show studios for an unscheduled interview. The taped segment, which is set to air tonight, is the first time Lindsay has broken her silence since being sentenced to jail on Friday. Despite her troubles, Lilo received a hot welcome from his audience, who reportedly rose to their feet in applause when she walked into the set.

The bulk of their chat obviously revolved around her legal issues. According to RadarOnline, she admitted to feeling “kind of dumb” about the whole thing, and the sentence of 120 days in jail “left her numb.” In addition to her jail time, Lindsay also faces 480 hours of community service stemming from felonly theft charges. But she did seem hopeful for the future, apparently confirming her role as John Gotti Jr’s wife in the upcoming Gotti: Three Generations.

Lindsay has been fielding many offers to appear on big name talk shows, but those close to the actress say that she chose Leno because she feels “grateful” to him. “He has been nothing but good to her and her family over the years,” a source told TMZ, “and has always been protective of her.”

Remarkable Engineering On This House

There are several features that set residential eye-candy apart from run-of-the-mill family home. In a city, perhaps it’s a sweeping terrace or a suburban-size kitchen. In the country, homeowners trick out their pads with tennis courts, swimming pools, and massive lawns. Often the “wow” factor is in the house itself. However these homes inspire real estate envy with a little something called the cantilever. Projecting an entire wing of a house with no visible means of support requires a lot of engineering know-how and a little bit of magic. From Australia to the Hamptons, these are the cantilevered properties that will change your perception.

Constructed in 2006, this house, located in Vezaiciai, Lithuania proves that cantilevers suit all personalities – the clients are a couple; one is an agricultural engineer and the other works in industrial design.

20 Year Old Stabs Himself To Death On Stage

An open-microphone night at an Oregon coffee shop turned tragic after a man took his own life on stage.

Witnesses said 20-year-old Kipp Walker was playing a song on a keyboard at Strictly Organic.

Patrons said after he stopped playing he began stabbing himself with a knife repeatedly.

The young man’s deadly actions left onlookers in shock.

A friend of Walker’s said he had planned to take his own life in public, and he knew it was coming.

“I’ve been preparing for it for a while, I’m sad about it, but I think I’m in shock, it’s like a whirlwind of emotions,” he said.

Walker reportedly spent some time at a mental health facility but his friend said he was set on taking his life.

The owner of the coffee shop said people were confused about what was happening at first.

“It was really unclear at first what was even happening. Because, you know, it is an open mic and it’s a performance. People at first thought it was some sort of theatre,” Owner Rhonda Ealy said.

The coffee shop where the suicide took place is offering counseling for those who witnesses the horrific tragedy.

Another air controller naps; new schedules coming

WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration changed air traffic control work schedules Saturday, acknowledging it has a widespread problem with fatigue after another controller fell asleep on duty — this time in Miami.

"We are taking important steps today that will make a real difference in fighting air traffic controller fatigue. But we know we will need to do more. This is just the beginning," FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said in a statement.

On Monday, Babbitt and Paul Rinaldi, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, will begin visiting air traffic control facilities to hear what controllers have to say and to remind them that sleeping on the job won't be tolerated. Their first stop is Atlanta, home of the world's busiest airport.

The latest sleeping incident — the fifth to be disclosed by FAA since late March — occurred just before 5 a.m. Saturday morning at a busy regional radar facility that handles high altitude air traffic for much of Florida, portions of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

According to a preliminary review of air traffic tapes, the controller did not miss any calls from aircraft and there was no impact on flight operations, the FAA said. The controller, who was working an overnight shift, has been suspended.

Prior to the start of the shift, all controllers were given a briefing on professionalism and the importance of reporting to work fit for duty, FAA said. The incident was reported to a manager by another controller, the agency said. There were 12 controllers on duty and two managers, it said.

Rinaldi said the Miami incident was particularly disturbing because there was ample staff on duty at the time.

"It is never acceptable when we don't provide the level of service expected and required of us on every shift," he said. "We take our responsibilities very seriously and believe fatigue is a significant factor in these instances."

Regional radar centers are usually large rooms, but each controller has a cubicle. Because of the layout, a controller can accidently doze off without being noticed.

It has been known for decades that fatigue is rampant among controllers. FAA rules forbid any sleeping on the job, even during breaks. Employees who violate those rules can be fired. But present and former controllers told The Associated Press that unsanctioned napping at night is an open secret within the agency.

At a radar facility, one controller may nap while the other handles two radar positions. At an airport tower, one may handle takeoffs and landings while the other sleeps. Then, they would swap.

Many supervisors look the other way when controllers trade turns working their assignments to nap because they know how tiring controllers' schedules are, said retired controller Rick Perl of Oxnard, Calif.

"It has always been a problem," said Perl, who at one time was an instructor at FAA's academy for new controllers in Oklahoma City, Okla. "There is no way you can get off at 2 p.m. in the afternoon and be back at 10 p.m. at night and get decent sleep."

Most tiring are the midnight shifts, which usually begin about 10 p.m. and end about 6 a.m. Staying awake during those hours disrupts the body's natural sleep rhythms, sleep scientists say.

A new fatigue study by FAA and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, which has not yet been released, found that one of the most tiring schedules worked by controllers is a week of midnight shifts, followed by a week of early morning shifts and then a week of swing shifts that start in the afternoon and wind up at night. The schedule doesn't give controllers time to adjust to any one set of waking and sleeping hours.

Another schedule compresses five eight-hour work days into as few days as possible, concluding with a day shift that ends about 2 p.m. and a midnight shift that begins about 10 p.m. Some controllers like the schedule because when they conclude the fifth shift they have three and a half days off before they have report back to work. But the schedule is also known as the "rattler" because it doubles back and bites those who work it.

The study's chief recommendation is that controllers be allowed sleeping breaks of as long as 2 1/2 hours during midnight shifts. Some other countries — including Germany and Japan — provide sleeping rooms for controllers on break at night.

Babbitt said the changes to controllers' schedules will be implemented within 72 hours, but he didn't describe the changes.

Earlier this week, FAA announced it was ending its practice of single-staffing control towers at 26 airports and a radar facility where traffic is light between midnight and 6 a.m. The head of the FAA's air traffic operations resigned.

The agency also will commission an independent review of its training curriculum and qualifications "to make sure our new controllers have mastered the right skills and learned the right disciplines before they start their careers," Babbitt and Rinaldi said in a column posted late Friday on the USA Today website.

New Chili Pepper Crowned World’s Hottest

Fighting fire with more fire -- and a WWF-worthy name -- there's a new champ holding the title of world's hottest chili pepper.
As you may recall, in December The Lookout reported on the Naga Viper and its initiation as the chili pepper with the most heat. But now there's a hotter ticket in town: the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T.
Yes, the Butch T. outdistances the Naga Viper, barely, on the Scoville scale -- which rates spice power by tracking the presence of a chemical compound in chilis. The Australian Butch T. weighs in at 1.46 million heat units on the scale, while the British Naga Viper tops out at 1.38 million. For comparison, the average jalapeno pepper falls around 5,000.
"They're just severe, absolutely severe," Marcel de Wit, co-owner of the chili farm that produced the pepper, told Australian Geographic. "No wonder they start making crowd-control grenades now with chillies. It's just wicked." He added that the pepper is so potent, he and his his team have to wear protective gloves when handling the Butch T., lest their hands are left "pumping heat for two days later." Making salsa with the Butch T., he explained, involves wearing chemical masks and body suits to defend against fumes given off in the cooking heat.
After being given some rare seeds by Aussie farmer Neil Smith, de Wit began cultivating the Butch T. two years ago. The champion chili will also soon be the main ingredient in a stingingly hot sauce called the Scorpion Strike.
Here's a video of de Wit and Smith suffering through a sampling of the winning chili.

Nate Dogg's Sons Plan To Follow In Their Father's Footsteps & Work On An Album

I Wish These Boys Good Look In There Fathers Honor.

Baby Daddy

Don't nobody ever question if I am a real man. Or a real father! I been fighting for 13 years and just found this.

Here is a Responsive Declaration to the Superior Court of California, County of San Joaquin Dated April 15th, 1997 (Isaiah is now 13)

First before I commence with going into detail on the matter at hand, I would like to express my deepest apologies for my personal matters to be sorted out by the courts. It is my believe that there are matters of a more serious nature that need undivided attention. On the other hand, I will not hesitate to ask for assistance regardless of the outcome, when all other avenues of approach have been exhausted.

The first time my presence was made at the courthouse was on December 9th 1997. This was to establish parental relationship, visitation, and temporary child support. At first I was intimidated by the process but once I gathered myself the mediator that assisted Yvette and I was very receptive to each others needs, questions, and concerns. She clearly explained in detail all the visitation periods and the arrangement for transportation of my son. Even though I felt the amount of Child Support would financially break me; I accepted the challenge and reverted my thoughts to my beloved offspring as a motivational tool to "just do it!" The courts got me to recognize the importance and the self-satisfaction when I am responsible for all the aspects of my sons life. Despite what the money is to be used for it could only enable me to advance in the career I have chosen. It was a long drive back to Los Angeles, California where preparation for the future took place. The scheduled visits (at the early stages) that needed to take place with minimal breaks in-between became a dilemma when weighing all my priorites. I could not afford to drive to Stockton every 1st, 3rd, and 5th weekend of the month as well as holding onto my financial obligations. I chose to get the money first in order to build a trust factor with Yvette. My son was extremely young and obviously in need of maternal security. Every time I recieved a pay check from that point on, Isaiah came off top. Sometimes sacrificing more than I could afford. If there was change left over I would schedule a trip to Stockton with ample amount of time notified prior to my arrival. Yvette cooperated as much as her parents were willing to let me visit. For the most part, longer than the court order read.

A turning point came in my life when I was wrongfully terminated from my job late in February, where the very costly process of arbitration has begun. I have learned if you do well too fast, it presence a threat to immediate supervisors in the Mortgage Banking Industry. I immediately contacted Yvette to make her aware of my misfortune. Luckily on Valentines's day weekend I had done so well I doubled my support payment and visited my son. After a week of indecision I realized there what no longer a reason for me to still live in Los Angeles. I focused on being closer to my son so that I could take part in all scheduled visitation. I relocated to Sacramento where there is an opportunity available but it will take time. I am self employed and receive 100% commission. I wish paychecks where automatic. I will not attempt to deceive anyone. I am currently one and a half months behind and giving 125% effort to catch up. Estimated time for first amount of funds received is around June 1st. I can only do my best.

Since I have moved to Sacramento (which Yvette was notified weeks before my arrival) I have been treated with absolutely no respect or decency as a human being.

I understood that the adjustment would be difficult for her family so I proceeded with caution. To my ignorance I did not know that my race (Black) was a problem. It is clear to see now that after I have sought and gained knowledge they (Yvette and her parents) chose not to accept me for who I am. I have been subject to comments that were intended to defame only. To make it short (Yvette and her parents) have attempted to provoke me in every way unimaginable to go overboard so their ungodly ideals about black people were accurate. I refused to give in and it has only enabled me to hone in on my talents I didn't think were available. They are (if they chose to love Isaiah unconditionally) in need to first accept and respect Isaiah for being Black. Then gain knowledge about our culture, different mannerisms, and how differently we interact with others so that his growing under their wing will not be a confusing period for him. I cannot change who I am and will not because of the lack of knowledge on their part. Their fantasy was that Chris was going to be a "once a year" father being that I moved to Los Angeles. They clearly feel threatened by my presence and don't welcome me inside their home. That is their right. But the courts say that I can at least be a "part time father." That decision I will honor.

A lot of this information is obsolete in the court of law in its simplest form, but pertinent when attempting to paint a clear picture. I humbly list the request of the court:

1. Visitation transfer at a neutral site. Preferrably picking Isaiah up and the Stockton Police Station and for release at the Sacramento Sheriffs station. This would eliminate all confrontation with third parties. Times I have dropped Isaiah off at Yvette's place of residence she was not home and I had to leave Isaiah with his step-grandfather. Resentment is manifesting and it would be a wise decision to eliminate unnecessary confrontation.

2. Made aware of Isaiah's health care provider. His pediatrician's name and phone number, so that I could have direct contact with him. They have threatened to manipulate the court order by providing a doctors note that will block my visitations. Yvette's mother is a registered nurse here in Stockton and can possibly persuade for the forging of a non-visitation slip due to illness. On March 19th a day clearly scheduled for my visit, Yvette told me I could not see my son or come pick him up because he was sick. I attempted to reconcile by offering to just sit with him and that was not honored either.

3. Be given Isaiah's Social Security Number. I have clearly attempted to obtain that information from them and there response was, "we don't know you yet, you could be using it to illegally claim Isaiah on your tax returns." I informed them that it would be used for acceptance of my life insurance policy while serving honorably in the USMC. They still have not responded.

CONCLUSION: It is so clear to see that Yvette is not making the decision in her life when it comes to what is best for Isaiah as a whole. I hope that she recognizes that I am more of an important entity in Isaiah's life then any third party. Whatever the outcome, I would like to appreciate the courts for giving me the opportunity to have my argument heard.

Respectfully,
Chris Gonzales

Japanese nuclear plant worker discusses choice to sacrifice his life

As Japan continues to grapple with catastrophic radiation leaks at the quake-damaged Fukushima Daichii nuclear complex, the plant's remaining workers have shown heroic dedication in the face of a task that amounts to a likely suicide mission.

The global audience following the Japanese nuclear drama has learned a little about these selfless heroes. But some of the most basic questions about them--who they are and what has motivated them to make the ultimate sacrifice--have gone unanswered. Now, however, the Agence France Press reporter Kimi De Freytas has published an interview with one of the Fukushima workers that sheds considerable light on how they understand their mission--and how they are holding up under under the extraordinary, mortal stress they are facing.

Hiroyuki Kohno, a 44-year-old plant worker who's been employed in the nuclear industry since he was a teenager, promptly answered the emergency call issued by his employer, a subcontractor for the Tokyo Electric Power Company. Shortly after last March's devastating earthquake and tsunami produced a power outage at the facility, Kohno's employers sent out an all-hands appeal via email.

"Attention. We would like you to come work at the plant. Can you?" De Freytas reports the email read. Kohno, who has worked at the Fukushima facility for the past decade, said he knew what the implications of heeding the call would be.

"To be honest, no one wants to go," Kohno told De Freytas. "Radiation levels at the plant are unbelievably high compared with normal conditions. I know that when I go this time, I will return with a body no longer capable of work at a nuclear plant.

"Kohno told De Freytas that as a single man with no children, he felt obligated to answer the call and join the team that the media has dubbed the "Fukushima Fifty." Better that he face the risk, he explained, so as to spare his colleagues who have dependents counting on them. Besides, he added, the workers in the plant are his brothers and sisters, and he feels an allegiance to them.

"There's a Japanese expression: 'We eat from the same bowl.' These are friends I shared pain and laughter with. That's why I'm going," he explained to De Freytas.

Other workers among the Fukushima Fifty have apparently discussed the dire prospects ahead fairly openly. As the unidentified mother of a 32-year-old plant worker explained in a tearful phone interview with Fox News, "My son and his colleagues have discussed it at length and they have committed themselves to die if necessary to save the nation." Meanwhile, plant officials have sought to supplement the ranks of workers seeking to contain the spread of radioactive contamination from the facility with workers known as "jumpers"—contract employees who agree to complete designated tasks before fleeing in the hopes that they can shun sustained radioactive exposure. Workers in the "jumper" corps are being offered as much as $5,000 a day, Reuters reports—and many are still turning the offers down.

While the fate of Kohno and his fellow workers remains uncertain, their fellow citizens are already determined to commemorate their heroism.

He became a platinum star producer, but unfortunately some of the choices he made led to a halt in his career. Frustrated by two failed marriages, poor management and legal representation, he engaged in criminal activity that eventually resulted in a brief period of incarceration. Since then, DJ Daryl has overcome the obstacles and challenges he once faced in his past, and has taken the necessary corrective steps and changed his life for the better. He met and married his best friend and soul mate Amber, who loves and supports him and shares his passion for the entertainment industry. Hallucinogenic H2O

As I so often do when I roll out of bed on a Saturday morning at 11am, I grab one of my smart devices and hit up my Facebook page to check what my friends are talking about. The level of disscusion can range from Bible quotes, death of a loved one, cracking hilarious jokes, independent artistic support requests, men/women bashing, the word on the streets, to the exaltations of their favorite pharmaceutical and street drugs. I love Facebook because it is the land of raw expression whether truthful or not. Intentionally I have sought individuals with a like mind to myself. Those that love to spead and expose the fallacious nature of commerce.

One of my friends D. Bryant posted a You Tube video that was produced via CNN. A simple piece that detailed how 25% of the bottled water industry, acknowledged by the major corporations, is simply filtered tap water. The deception is apparent in the labels and packaging of the product at question. Pictures of a natural spring stream, thermal geysers, or a snowy mountain top. But on the back of the bottles they will have P.W.S. in small print which stands for Public Water Source (tap water).

I was excited by this video because it confirmed my natural instinct towards the right path that I have been on. People, for the last 4 years I have chose to live an "alternative lifestyle". By choice I live in my van and float the streets of Southern Cali; hence being in a position where access to running water is limited to the gym, park, public libraries, or a Starbucks when I want fast WIFI to transmit my experiences and knowledge to you.

So I rise out of my custom made memory foam posturepedic mattress, grateful for the overcast day and shade, and groom and clothe myself. I realized I was out of fresh water this morning to brush my teeth so I head to a spot that has the picture you see above. I grab 25 cents and fill my gallon water jug. I smiled at the machine because the water coming out of it is the exact same thing that is in most of the "bottled" water you might buy at the local Costco or grocery store for beyond a fraction of the cost! Check my break down.

For an average family of four, for which an experience in can personally attest to, you will go threw a case (24 bottles; 16 ounces per bottle, which ='s to approximately 3 gallons give or take a swig) of "bottled" tap water on an average of once every three days during the California summer months. The average cost of a case of "bottled" tap water is $6 bucks equaling $730 dollars per year. The discrepancy with the amount spent inside the grocery store versus right by the door on the way in, is as wide as the distance of the Grand Canyon for the same quality water! As you can see in the picture provided, it costs 75¢ per gallon at these locations. (family of four annual price $90.75; saving $630.25)

I provide you this analogy simply to give you something you may have overlooked or accepted. You are smarter than you think regardless if you are a baller or not, or are you? Me personally, I use the savings for nights I want to pull up by the ocean, pop my windows open, and have beach front property and Patron shots at a local taco Tuesday's for the night. But that's me. I just don't want you to be fooled by corporations like PepsiCo, Coca Cola Bottling, and several others pushing their Hallucinogenic H2O. The PS3 Is Best Entertainment Device

When it comes to being entertained in the living room, there are some things that practically all consumers are looking for. They want a device that’s affordable, offers a nice selection of content, and can survive the next few years without becoming obsolete.

Admittedly, there are many such devices on store shelves right now. Consumers can opt for the Apple TV, Roku’s set-top boxes, and even HDTVs that come with built-in apps. The choices are endless, and for the most part, the entertainment opportunities are, as well.

But if I were to choose a single device that can best them all and deliver the kind of entertainment that would satisfy just about any customer in the living room, it would be hard not to pick Sony’s PlayStation 3.

Now, I know that there are some out there — especially Xbox fans — that hear that and scoff. For years now, they’ve heard people say that the PlayStation 3 is the go-to platform for entertainment, and they’re sick of hearing it. But the fact is, the PlayStation 3 is offering the best entertainment options in the living room today. And as worthwhile as the Xbox 360, Apple TV, and Roku set-top boxes are, they can’t match the PlayStation 3.

Sony’s console delivers just about everything entertainment-seekers are after. It comes with a Netflix app, Hulu Plus, the ability to listen to music, and support for 3D content. It’s also a game console, which means those who want to play a video game, rather than watch a few shows, can do so. It also boasts support for online gaming for those who spend most of their time engaging in that activity.

That alone would make the PlayStation 3 a good buy for consumers. But when one considers that the device also comes with a Blu-ray drive, and its player is widely considered one of the top options on the market, it quickly becomes clear that the device’s $300 price tag is a downright bargain.

If you’re still not convinced, think of it this way: for $100, you’ll get an Apple TV that can handle all your iTunes content and let you watch Netflix. You can also rent content, and access both Flickr and Internet Radio. It lacks gaming and a Blu-ray player. The same can be said for Roku set-top boxes, which offer a host of entertainment options, but lack those extra elements.

The Xbox 360 comes close to matching the PlayStation 3. It has all the same features as its chief rival in the gaming space, as well as the same price. However, it lacks a Blu-ray drive, which as 1080p sets enter more and more homes, is jumping higher on the average consumer’s list of desired features.

As someone who has spent ample time in the living room enjoying all forms of entertainment, I simply don’t see any other device that can deliver the same value proposition as the PlayStation 3.

Are there better game consoles? Perhaps. Is accessing Netflix content easier on the Apple TV or my HDTV? Sure. But for $300, those who are looking for a single option that will satisfy all their needs simply won’t go wrong with Sony’s console.
