7 things that will be cheaper in 2012

While it's true that prices usually go up, not down, 2012 does have quite a few deals in store for you.

Thanks to a slow economy, a surplus of inventory and plenty of competition between brands, everything from used cars to eReaders will be cheaper than they were in years past. Read on to find out how to save on seven big-ticket items.

Homes

In the market for a new house? This year may be the time to take the plunge.

“Housing is an area that will continue to favor buyers in 2012,” says Jim Sloan, wealth manager and author of The Financially Informed Woman. Thanks to historically low interest rates and a depressed market, Sloan says it will be “much cheaper than normal to purchase a home.” And according to Andrew Schrage, consumer expert at the personal finance blog Money Crashers Personal Finance, rampant foreclosures mean that banks will be willing “to let go of properties for less than market value.” This trend is solid across the board: “Whether the house costs $50,000 or $3 million, the buyer is in control,” says Sloan.

Used cars

If you’re buying a car in 2012, consider getting a used one, suggests Sarah Lee Marks, automotive consumer advocate and founder of car-buying guide MyCarLady.com.

As new cars and money for auto loans become more accessible, people will be dumping their current cars. This will cause the used car market to spike by 20%, says Marks—and the extra inventory will drive down prices. But beware of used cars that seem much cheaper than similar models on the pre-owned market—if it seems too good to be true, it probably is, warns Marks. And always ask to see the car’s original title; if the seller is hesitant to show you it could reveal that the car is re-salvaged or a buy-back, both of which mean that there’s a problem with the vehicle. It’s also a red flag if the seller won’t let you take the car to an independent inspector, which is something you should always do as a prospective buyer.

Travel

Depending on where you’re headed, 2012 can provide plenty of flight and hotel deals.

Though warm-weather destinations like Florida and California will remain popular and unaffected by price drops, getting to and staying in other locales will become more affordable, says Subodh Karnik, Chief Commercial Officer of CheapOair.com.

“The economic woes in Southern Europe—think Spain, Greece and Portugal—will likely drive a lot of deals,” he explains. “Even Italian and French wine country may have less sticker shock than last year!” Also, because many airlines have expanded their service to the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, there are more flights and seats to fill—which ups the chances of last-minute fare sales.

Wine

Your favorite bottle of red or white may cost you less green for two main reasons.

“Competition in the wine market is huge at the moment, and since wine aficionados are spending less due to the lagging economy, inventory needs to be moved,” says Schrage. Proof that significant discounts exist: Schrage, a wine connoisseur, ordered 24 bottles of wine for $96 from ZagatWine.com. “The retail value on each of these is usually closer to $15 or $20 a bottle!”

Flat-Screen TVs

Extra inventory is also why once-pricey TVs became about 30 to 40 percent cheaper in 2010 and 2011—and the trend is expected to continue into 2012, according to Yung Trang, president of TechBargains.com.

“Retailers overestimated the TV demand for the past holiday season, forcing them to sell many models at clearance prices,” explains Schrage, who took advantage of the situation. He bought a 46-inch LCD TV for $250, and it wasn’t even Black Friday! The model could have gone for between $1,000 and $1,200 as little as six months earlier. LED TV sales have been sluggish, and people are still deciding if smart TVs (those with wireless capability) are here to stay or just a passing fad, so prices will keep plummeting.

eReaders

Amazon started a massive trend with their Kindle eReader, and now the market is flooded with options.

“Just about every company out there is getting in the eReader game, which has pushed down prices across the board,” says Schrage. “

Another Kindle upgrade is expected in 2012, which will lower prices on some of the earlier generation eReaders,” he adds. But, Schrage urges, it’s important to do ample research so you buy the best eReader for your lifestyle, since they vary “considerably” in capabilities.

Tablets

The iPad isn’t the only tablet in town anymore. With competition from Dell, Lenovo and even Amazon (the newest eReader, the Kindle Fire, is technically a tablet), all tablet prices are decreasing.

Trang expects prices for the iPad 2 to drop 20%—from $499 to $399 once the iPad 3 is introduced this year. Though features on the latest iPad haven’t yet been announced, Trang suspects that they will include a higher resolution camera, better video recording, and Siri, the electronic personal assistant that’s available on the iPhone 4. And for many consumers, “the iPad 3 features won’t be necessary, so the 20% savings will really be a deal,” he says.

National Geographic has released this soon-to-be classic photograph of one shark eating another shark whole.

The photo comes from Daniela Ceccarelli, of Australia's Research Council Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies.
Ceccarelli was working with fellow researcher David Williamson on conducting a "fish census" off Great Keppel Island, part of the country's Great Barrier Reef. That's when Ceccarelli thought she spotted a brown-banded bamboo shark hanging out near the ocean's floor.

"The first thing that caught my eye was the almost translucent white of the bamboo shark," Ceccarelli told National Geographic in an email. Instead, as Ceccarelli moved in for a closer look she noticed a camouflaged wobbegong shark emerging from seclusion with the same bamboo shark partially wedged inside its jaws.

"It became clear that the head of the bamboo shark was hidden in its mouth," she said. "The bamboo shark was motionless and definitely dead."

As the New Scientist explains, Wobbegongs, aka carpet sharks, are silent predators, waiting at the bottom of the ocean floor for their pray to pass by. And as stunning as this photo may be, it's not uncommon for Wobbegongs to devour such large meals.

Like several kinds of snakes, the Wobbegong has a dislocating jaw and rearward-pointing teeth that help it consume disproportionately large prey.

Although Wobbegongs bite humans with some regularity, these usually aren't actual attacks where the shark is hunting for prey. Rather, these bites tend to be more of a defensive reflex after the shark itself has been assaulted, usually by someone unintentionally stepping on it.

While shark attacks were down in the U.S. last year, deaths from shark bites more than doubled worldwide with 12 reported deaths all happening outside of the U.S. However, Florida still led the overall national count for most attacks, with 11 of the 29 attacks reported inside the U.S.

"We had a number of fatalities in essentially out-of-the-way places, where there's not the same quantity and quality of medical attention readily available," George Burgess, director of the Shark Attack File, told Gannett. "They also don't have histories of shark attacks in these regions, so there are not contingency plans in effect like there are in places such as Florida."

Facebook "defriending" led to double murder, police say

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) - A Tennessee couple who "defriended" a woman on Facebook were murdered in their home by the jilted woman's father and another man, police said on Thursday.

"It's the worst thing I've ever seen," Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece said, adding he had never seen anything like it in his 27 years in law enforcement in the area. "We've had murders, but nothing like this. This is just senseless."

He said Billy Clay Payne, Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth were killed last month after they deleted Jenelle Potter, the daughter of one of the suspects, from their "friends" list. Both were shot in the head and the man had his throat cut.

The couple's 8-month-old baby was in the mother's arms, unharmed, when the bodies were found.

Marvin Enoch "Buddy" Potter Jr., 60, and Jamie Lynn Curd, 38, were each charged on Wednesday in Mountain City in northeastern Tennessee with two counts of first-degree murder. The men were arrested on Tuesday.

The case was not the first involving violence linked to Facebook. Last year in Iowa, a woman was arrested on accusations of setting fire to a friend's garage after she was defriended on the social network site, local media reported.

In Texas, a man was accused of hitting his wife after she failed to "like" a Facebook post he wrote about the anniversary of his mother's death, according to media reports.

In the Tennessee case, Reece said a couple of harassment cases had been filed against Jenelle Potter in court over "someone blocking her or taking her off."

"Once you've crossed her, you've crossed her father too," Reece said, adding that Jenelle Potter, in her late 20s or early 30s, stays home with her parents and was constantly on Facebook.

Her father, "Buddy" Potter, will return to court next week for a bond hearing after he hires an attorney. Curd, also a second cousin of one of the victims, was appointed an attorney and bond was set at $750,000 for each murder count. His preliminary hearing will be in March.

No charges have been filed against Jenelle Potter, the sheriff said. She could not reached for comment.

Curd's attorney, R.O. Smith, an assistant public defender, said it was "safe to say there's more to it than the Facebook problem, it appears."

"I wish I could provide more of what went on, but there's needless to say a lot of rumors swirling around and nothing substantiated on the rumors," Smith said.

Murder suspect runs into traffic on I-5, is killed

STOCKTON - A homicide suspect confronted by police Monday morning on Interstate 5 ran into freeway traffic and was struck and killed by an oncoming big rig.

Stockton resident John Quincy Ellis, 46, stopped in front of a big rig heading north around 7 a.m. on I-5 near March Lane, according to, police who called the incident an "apparent suicide."

Ellis was the lone suspect in the slaying Sunday of a 61-year-old woman in Santa Rosa, and the investigation led detectives to Ellis in Stockton.

Police from both cities' police departments were working together Monday morning when Stockton police pulled over Ellis on southbound Interstate 5.

Ellis immediately exited the car and asked police to kill him, said Officer Pete Smith, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department.

The suspect then ran into the southbound lanes, hopping the median into northbound traffic and getting as far as the outside lane.

Then Ellis stopped, Smith said, "allowing a big rig to strike him."

The oncoming truck did not have time to stop, and Ellis was pronounced dead at the scene, Smith said.

The fatal incident triggers an investigation by San Joaquin County's District Attorney's Office, following the same procedure as an officer-involved shooting.

California Highway Patrol controlled traffic after the incident.

Santa Rosa and Stockton police began working together earlier Monday morning.

On Sunday afternoon, Carole Marie Brooks was fatally shot in a Santa Rosa apartment, but a suspect was spotted leaving the scene in a silver-colored compact vehicle, according to police.

She was shot in the stomach at a small rental property where she ran a massage therapy business, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.

Homicide detectives identified the vehicle as a rental car from Stockton.

Ellis was driving the rental car when he was pulled over on I-5, said police Sgt. Lisa Banayat, a spokeswoman for the Santa Rosa Police Department.

Ellis was the only suspect in the Sunday killing, she said.

Ellis' relationship to the victim remains unknown, Banayat said.

Court Overturns Prop. 8 in California, Says State Can’t Ban Gay Marriage

The 9th Circuit Court in California struck down the state's voter-passed ban on gay marriage, ruling 2-1 that it violates the rights of gay Californians.

"Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples," Judge Reinhardt wrote in the decision. The Court concludes that the law violates the 14th Amendment rights of gay couples to equal protection under the law. Gay marriage will still not be allowed in the state, leaving time for Prop 8 defenders to challenge the decision.

The Circuit Court backed up District Judge Judge Vaughn Walker, who ruled in August of 2010 that the state of California has no "rational basis" to single out gay men and women as ineligible for marriage. The group fighting for Proposition 8, which passed in 2008 after thousands of gay couples had already married, appealed Walker's decision arguing that it should be vacated because Walker is gay and has a long-time same-sex partner.

Walker's 2010 decision was called a "grand slam" by gay rights advocates, who hope it will convince the Supreme Court to decide that states cannot outlaw gay marriage. But Reinhardt was explicit in his decision that the court's decision is "narrow" and only relates to California, not to the entire nation. The pro-Prop. 8 camp has said it will appeal the decision. The group can now ask that all 11 members of the 9th Circuit hear their case, instead of just the panel of three who decided against them on Tuesday.

Dmo - Ferris Wheel

Josh Powell Tragedy: Son Said Mom Was In Trunk of Car, Lawyer Claims

The young sons of Susan and Josh Powell, who died with their father when he ignited an explosion in their Washington home, were beginning to verbalize that their mother was in the trunk of their father's car on the night that she disappeared in 2009, a lawyer for the missing woman's parents said.

Attorney Steve Downing told the Associated Press that Braden and Charles Powell, who were 2 and 4 at the time of Susan Powell's disappearance, were beginning to tell their grandparents details about the night that their father took them on a late-night camping trip during a blizzard, including the fact that their mother disappeared after leaving in the car with their father.
"They were beginning to verbalize more," Downing said. "The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that mommy was in the trunk. Mom and dad got out of the car and mom disappeared."

Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah did not return phone calls inquiring about the children's assertions about their mother's presence on the December 2009 camping trip, AP reported.

"Quite frankly, this has obviously quickly unfolded up in Washington and we're obviously just working through the details ourselves here," Powell, who is not related to the family, said earlier on Sunday.

Josh Powell set off an explosion at his home Sunday that killed himself and his two sons, who were there for a supervised visit.
"We believe that he killed his kids and himself," Pierce County, Wash., Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer said Sunday.

Josh Powell's lawyer, Jeffrey Bassett, said he received an email from his client minutes before the explosion that said "I'm sorry, goodbye," but he didn't see it until two hours later, when he was informed of the blast.

Bassett told AP he knew his client was upset about being denied custody of his sons at a court hearing last week, when he was ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation and polygraph test in order to get them back.

Click here for a look at the history of the disappearance of Susan Powell.

Graham, Wash., Deputy Chief Gary Franz told ABC News that a Child Protective Services (CPS) worker had just dropped off Powell's two sons at the house for a supervised visit. Powell took his two sons inside the house and then locked the CPS worker out.

"The children were just right in front of her as she was walking up to the door," Child Protective Services spokeswoman Sherry Hill said. "They went into the house and Josh shut the door right in front of her and locked it."

The CPS worker smelled gas, stepped away and the house exploded. The case worker was not physically harmed.
"He grabbed the kids, locked her out of the house, and immediately the house went up in flames, very quickly, very big, so we believe that Josh Powell intentionally set this fire," Troyer said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and found the three bodies. Police are awaiting verification from the Medical Examiner's Office, but said they believe the bodies are those of Josh Powell and his two sons.

Troyer told ABC News affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle that emails Powell sent to authorities seemed to confirm that Powell planned the explosion. Troyer did not elaborate on the contents of the emails.

The house, which was on a dead end in a quiet residential neighborhood, has burned down to a charred frame.

Josh Powell is the only named person-of-interest in Susan Powell's 2009 disappearance, but he had not been charged. The couple's two sons were placed in custody of Susan Powell's parents in 2011 after Josh Powell's father, Steve Powell, was arrested on charges of voyeurism and child pornography.

At a hearing Wednesday, a statement from the West Valley City, Utah, police noted that information and images were found on Josh Powell's computer that "specifically related to their children's welfare," according to ABC affiliate KTVX in Salt Lake City.

The police did not specify what the information was, but Judge Kathryn J. Nelson ruled that because of that information, Josh Powell would not be allowed to have his children back until he submitted to a psychosexual evaluation and a polygraph test, the report said.

Bassett, Josh Powell's attorney, said the ruling was unfair to his client, who has not been charged with any crimes.

"Utah was dangling the alleged content of this disk. If this disk contains what they're saying it contains why haven't they arrested my client?" he said at the hearing.

The children were to remain with Chuck and Judy Cox until Josh Powell's next hearing, which was scheduled for July. Josh Powell was allowed twice-weekly supervised visitations with his sons during that time, KTVX reported.

The Top Hiring Employers in America's Biggest Cities

As unemployment levels fitfully decline, plenty of recession-weary businesses remain hesitant to expand their payrolls—but a new report from the job aggregator SimplyHired.com offers good news for job seekers everywhere: There are big companies in every major metropolitan area hiring in heaps.

Simply Hired's new employment outlook report reveals the five companies hiring the most in 25 major metro areas. It turns out that Chrysler is hiring the most in Detroit, with 790 job openings, while UnitedHealth Group is doing the heaviest hiring in the Twin Cities. The health insurance firm is looking to fill 2,898 positions in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Meanwhile, retailers like Home Depot and Staples are taking on the biggest number of new employees in Atlanta and New York.

“Metro areas that stand out include Washington, D.C., which continues to be strong due to government hiring, and the San Francisco Bay Area, due to technology sector growth,” says Gautam Godhwani, chief executive of SimplyHired.com. “We also see strength in Boston, Austin and Seattle, also influenced by growth in the technology sector.”

Simply Hired's report looks at nationwide hiring trends, too. “There is significant evidence that the overall job market is improving,” Godhwani says. “Job openings in the Simply Hired database grew 1.5% month-over-month and 9.2% year-over-year. Historically, employment is a lagging indicator to economic recovery. Simply Hired has seen an uptick in job openings for much of last year. Those job openings are now getting filled, and we see more favorable numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We expect these trends to continue, with a better employment market in 2012.”

Simply Hired indexes job listings across the web from job boards, newspapers, company career sites and staffing agencies. The company uses a patent-pending de-duplication algorithm and actively monitors job quality to provide a real-time snapshot of all job openings available right now.
