Pacific Avenue store robbed

STOCKTON - A man robbed a store in the 5900 block of Pacific Avenue about 9 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. Witnesses told officers the man entered the store and asked to see the manager about a product, police said. As the manager was assisting him, the man acted as though he had a gun and demanded money from the register, authorities said. Employees handed over cash, and the man fled on foot toward Pacific Avenue. The robber was described as a black man 20 to 24 years old standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 180 to 200 pounds and wearing a black sweatshirt, black sweat pants, a black hat with a red brim and a black and white Nike duffel bag.

3 found dead in Calif. apartment blaze; 3 injured

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A couple and their granddaughter were killed and three others were injured — including a police officer credited with saving at least one person — in a late-night fire at a Northern California apartment complex, authorities said Sunday. The officer and firefighters called to the complex shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday found people trapped in an apartment on the second floor of the building, San Jose Fire Department Capt. Mary Gutierrez said. The police officer, who has not been named, entered the burning apartment and pulled at least one person to safety, Gutierrez said. "He was one of the first on the scene," Gutierrez said. "He had a fire extinguisher, entered the burning apartment and performed at least one rescue. He got somebody out of that burning apartment." After firefighters put the fire out, the bodies of a man, a woman and a child were recovered, Gutierrez said. A woman who escaped the fire told the San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/12Rk1Kp ) she lost her parents, Bulmaro and Mariana Maldonado, and 4-year-old daughter Kyra in the blaze. "I just woke up, and the room was on fire," Cecilia Maldonado said. The police officer was one of three people taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Gutierrez said. She did not know the condition of the officer or of the two other people hospitalized. Their names have not been released, and San Jose police did not immediately return a call seeking information about the officer.

China debuts another High Speed Train

BEIJING (AP) — China on Wednesday opened the world's longest high-speed rail line that more than halves the time required to travel from the country's capital in the north to Guangzhou, an economic hub in southern China. The opening of the 2,298 kilometer (1,428 mile)-line was commemorated by the 9 a.m. departure of a train from Beijing for Guangzhou. Another train left Guangzhou for Beijing an hour later. China has massive resources and considerable prestige invested in its showcase high-speed railways program. But it has in recent months faced high-profile problems: part of a line collapsed in central China after heavy rains in March, while a bullet train crash in the summer of 2011 killed 40 people. The former railway minister, who spearheaded the bullet train's construction, and the ministry's chief engineer, were detained in an unrelated corruption investigation months before the crash. Trains on the latest high-speed line will initially run at 300 kph (186 mph) with a total travel time of about eight hours. Before, the fastest time between the two cities by train was more than 20 hours.

Afghan policewoman kills US adviser in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan policewoman walked into a high-security compound in Kabul Monday and killed an American contractor with a single bullet to the chest, the first such shooting by a woman in a spate of insider attacks by Afghans against their foreign allies. Afghan officials who provided details identified the attacker as police Sgt. Nargas, a mother of four with a clean record. The shooting was outside the police headquarters in a walled compound which houses the governor's office, courts and a prison in the heart of the capital. A police official said she was able to enter the compound armed because she was licensed to carry a weapon as a police officer.

Dental Assistant Fired For Being "Irresistible" Is Devastated

After working as a dental assistant for ten years, Melissa Nelson was fired for being too "irresistible" and a "threat" to her employer's marriage. "I think it is completely wrong," Nelson said. "I think it is sending a message that men can do whatever they want in the work force." On Friday, the all-male Iowa State Supreme Court ruled that James Knight, Nelson's boss, was within his legal rights when he fired her, affirming the decision of a lower court.
