Young Jeezy Stands Alone in NYC

While a majority of the city was resting up for the work week ahead, trap music fanatics came out in full force to see Atlanta rap heavyweight Young Jeezy kickoff the second show of his Hustlaz Ambition tour. On an unseasonably cool winter night, hordes of spirited teens filed into New York’s Irving Plaza eager to catch the Snowman spit cold ass rhymes over his bone-chilling beats. As the lively audience hurried to lock down a decent POV in the venue—marching over mounds of cigar fillings sporadically scattered over the alcohol soaked wooden floors—the scene had more of a Friday evening buzz than a Sunday night feel.
The Snowman didn’t keep the star craving crowd of ambitious hustlers and hipsters waiting for long. As the house lights dimmed and the unmistakable punch from Jeezy’s 2005 smash single “Soul Survivor” blared through the compact car-sized-speakers at eardrum-harming decibels, the raspy-voiced rhyme slinger appeared front and center rocking all black everything. With the crowd primed and ready to go the thug motivator unleashed a run of his bombastic catalogue of anthems like “Put On” “I Do” and “Leave You Alone”.
Hitting the stage dolo, adorned in vintage 80’s hip hop attire, Ray-Bans, leather MCM cap, and a ginormous gold rope chain, Young took all in attendance on a gangsta stroll down memory lane as he performed hits from each of his Thug Motivation series, as well as cuts like “Get Allot,” and “Welcome Back” from his gold-selling 2008 effort The Recession.
Although the Atlanta star didn’t bring out any stars for his performance to the sold out and seemingly packed well over capacity show, the veteran MC needed no help with crowd control. Unlike the unfortunate riot that took place at his Orlando show during NBA All-Star weekend, midway through his set it became clear there would be no repeat performance of that sort here in NYC. Fans were here to see the ATL rap god do his thug thizzle. They came for a fix and he delivered. No fancy antics or distractions just a hard, raw and audible treats. The Real is back.
